Since the screen is dead I would suggest the easiest way to back up / access important content is through your PC/laptop. Install the necessary Sony Ericsson software on your computer and and connect it to your Sony Ericsson P1i and follow the back up instruction.

The problem you are experiencing is due to the fact that the LCD screen of your phone is bad,hence the touch screen will fail to respond.
