Your laptop is working with just the battery but not with the main power. This issue you have here is usually caused by a motherboard problem but have you tried to remove the battery then try to turn on computer? If it works then you might just need a BIOS update for the computer of not then there's a high chance that the motherboard your using is having a problem using the main source.
If the battery and AC adapter work fine on a different D520 then you have an issue with the charging circuit on the motherboard. Could also be the DC adapter jack soldered to the motherboard.
The most-likely cause is a "dead" motherboard.
Or, it could be that the circuits that recharge the battery have failed,
so that the battery has no charge left.
Make sure that you are using the correct AC Adapter. Dell usually supplies two different ones. They look very much the same. The difference is the amps. One is meant to be used in their port replicator. Look in the BIOS and make sure you have the setting correct for charging the unit.
it sounds like you did the right thing, i would search google for "Dell D520 keyboard", you should find many places at different prices, if you havent bought from the site before, try reading some customer feedback, and also, the cheapest may not be the best, look for a good return policy and or warranty for the item. if this helps pleas give a fixya rating thanks
I have heard about this problem with a number of Dell laptops, including the Inspiron models. The problem is that the connector for the power port may have been loosened after many years of use. This may require service from Dell on the motherboard.
