I have exactly the same problem. Won't run with or without the battery. I'm stumped. Anyone know what to try next?

all PCs do that , not just yours
all do after it ages, most do this 5+ years old.

this is a 2008 PC made year.(not a good year that)
    failed at 2010
so 99% sure that told the big battery is now dead or far far far worse shorted, and can even catch fire.
this pC also has charger board inside that can fail.
the huge battery just snap off the bottom , do that and run on AC pack only.
2008 PCs are very bad. year.
all failed huge jan1, 2007 , ROHS day./ USA lead out day, I'd say jan1, to dec,2007 can fail
both for ROHS and for bad caps. bad BGA GPU chip solder ball failures,
no country told so no exact dates for you , USA is above. only

the big battery can fail in 1 year abused, the battery maker tells you that and why ,.
so can CAP PLAGUE FAILURES (WIKI IT)
SO CAN LEAD OUT DAYS GPU CHIPS DEAD. (ROHS)

YOU BOUGHT A NEW CABLE ONLY (AC) OR NEW CABLE WITH POWER PACK BOTH, HUUMMMM

You need to take out the battery and try to power on the laptop with out it in..If it works then the battery is poched. Maybe the power supply you bought is wrong one? Did you buy it from dell?

Hyjacker Ann 2008, 13 year old PC now. 3 years old on OP' first post,
first off , OLD PCs fail for many reasons

all batteries this old are no good (both), remove the big one and leave it out until the PC runs right again.
and test PC o. only on the AC power PACK !
DO not use the wrong power pack, i have vast pack here so label all packs,

13 year old PC 101, rules. of failures, common as nails.
1: all batteries are dead and the RTC CMOS coin cell must be replace, or the PC has no way to boot.
2: powerpack bad, 19 vdc 3.3 amps, if not at least 18 volts it fails. we use a meter to test that , fast.
3: HDD bad , no HDD lasts 13 year, show me smart test passing IT WILL NOT PASS, full stop here.

and 20 more reasons to fuil
USB devices shorted, unplug them all.
all models inside can short and make the PC dead, (any PC on earth)
    and more.

the RTC coin cell is no good
    page 13 read (service man)
    https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-p...

    dead screen
well the PCs then all had bad GPU chips, USA, jan1,2007 is the lead out ROHS mandate, that cause vast GPU to fail and dead screen forever. GPU SOLDER BALL BGA HARD FAILED,

dead screen #2 (but external monitor works)
the CCFL lamps are dead at 20,000 hours
what is there to like in this dog, ZERO

flash light test works. LDC, but not with

to fix an PC you need to have spare parts, and tools and meters and skills.
why not ask a shop to fix it, no really.

    to all hyjackers here. 2021+
most PCs and for sure laptops fail this old, in fact if it did run ok that be the SURPRISE
if you have it repaired the labor alone is 10x value of this dead PC.
see how Econ101 kills old PC, now you know why.

time to move up, no, trash this junk and buy intel gen 4 or newer PC, i3 up, and i3-4nnn up.
    and win
and have future your PC can never have.

This PC can be repaired if the GPU chip is not bad as all were then, 2007 year made all.
    usa,
other countries failed on different year do to there own laws on RHOS, (getting the lead out)
no country told at all, by you or the hyjackers.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1318 and at first it said plugged in and not charging, now it says that no battery is detected. What are some troubleshooting that I can do

Try checking the connection between your battery and your laptop. Removing and reseating the battery generally solves this. However, if it doesn't, it may indicate that your battery has failed. There are many sellers that sell laptop batteries on ebay. Just purchase a new one and plug it in. Good luck!

Battery is plugged in the laptp Dell inspiron but not charging

First, I would check to see if your Battery is one that was RECALLED by following this link. Next, I recommend that you rule out the possibility that the Power Supply may be the issue/ Or the Battery may need to be replaced. Do the following:
1) Remove the Battery Pack and boot the system by using only the Power Supply. If your system runs normally without any issues, it is probably the battery that needs to be replaced.

My inspiron 1318 is less than a year old,the problem now is that my laptop does not on, it just shut down then it doesnt on. even i plug the charger. pls help thanks

Call Dell tomorrow... it will still be under warranty!

One thing to try is removing the battery and running it straight from the power adaptor. If it runs, you have a bad battery.

Labtop not charging

Try removing the battery and see if the laptop powers on. If it still doesn’t power on then either the motherboard is defective or the AC adaptor may have a broken wire in the cable.

How to charge up my new battery

Let it charge for a good 12 hours before running the machine, basically overnight. The power management system will recognize that this is a new battery, and is programed to start the initial charge sequence for a new battery. It is supposed to do this whether the machine is in use or not, but I recommend 12 hours just to be on the safe side.
