My nuvi 200 works great but the rechargeable battery only lasts an
average of 5 hours. When I go to plug it in with the car charger and
continue to navigate, it holds me on the charge screen and I am unable
to navigate anymore. I have the same problem if I try to use it when it
is plugged directly into the wall socket in my home, the charging
screen comes up and I cannot get the unti to acquire sattelites or
otherwise work until I unplug it, and then its fine?
I am using the same car charger that came with the unit and it was allowing me to navigate AND charge. Now I can only charge because the unit thinks it is plugged into a computer and therefore won't charge....
Vehicle Power Cable to the nüvi and connect the other end to your
computer, your nüvi does not operate as a GPS unit - it goes into some sort of charging mode. However, if
you FIRST turn on the nüvi in the battery mode then go
into the test mode (press the battery icon for about 8-9 seconds) from the main screen, THEN PLUG in the USB cable, and finally exit the test screen, your nüvi will restarI have a nuvi 200 that wont run when it is hooked - chapin.screen2.jpgds/images/chapin.screen2.jpg" alt="chapin.screen2.jpg" class="h_mi" />(reboot) and it
will operate just like it was plugged into the cradle connection in your vehicle.
This mode will charge the battery AND operate as a GPS.
It works with my computer USB cable, my cell phone charger and my car charger for my cell phone.
Don't forget to turn off the nüvi before unplugging."
Thanks dodge03. Your solution works nicely, but I think you'd agree that it is a pain in the neck to have to boot the numi this way. Have you found any car chargers that will work with a USB A to USB B cable without having to enter the test mode? One would think that someone (Garmin doesn't seem to) would make a cigarette-lighter style plug having USB A outputs that would mimic Garmin's cigarette plug style charger.

SOURCE: I have a nuvi 200 that wont run when it is hooked up to a power supply
The Nuvi 200 only has a 5 hour battery. Once charged, it can be removed from the charger, but the battery will only last 5 hours. Can you plug it into the car charger and navigate while charging BEFORE the battery dies? If so, and you don't have to remove the charger, you can leave the unit plugged in while you navigate without damage to the unit.

same problem
I have a 255w Garmin will not navigate when in charge mode what is wrong
mine does this too, I'm using the original car adapter, no splitters or anything.
Similar problem with 200W.
Now sorted. That's rather clever. Worked for me, in that it allows you to charge in the car using a regular non-Garmin usb charger!
