Whirlpool side by side 1991 vintage. Does not remove heat much at all in frig and freezer barely below freezing. Soft ice. Running constantly but coils don't seem to be hot.
Are you sure its running?check the rtc overload contactor on the compressor and make sure the compressor is getting off the start and on to the run windings,if not your compressor wony work and you will overheat the compressor windings and ruin the compressor in time

I cannot confirm weather your fridge had reversible doors as you listed no model but the standard for fridges that can reverse the door swing are changed by doing this -
You will see little plastic covers on the opposite side where the hinges and handles are currently located now.
There are some little clips that hinge the screws on the top and bottom of each handle.
Remove these little covers with a small flathead screwdriver.
Now remove the screws holding the freezer and refrigerator handles on.
Now pop the screw hole covers on the side of the frig/freezer you will using.
Now place and fasten with screws the handles on the other side of the frig/freezer door.
Now remove the top freezer hinge first by removing the 3 screws on top.
Now pull up on the hinge (save the spacer).
Now pull up on the freezer door.
Now remove the screws on the middle hinge.
Now pull up and remove the middle hinge while holding the frig door steady (save the spacer).
Now pull up on the frig door and set to the side.
Now remove the screws on the bottom hinge (save the spacer).
Now put the screw hole covers you removed from the other side in the screw hole exposed from the screws you just removed.
The switch
Start with the bottom hinge and place it on the opposite side (don't forget the spacer).
Place the frig door on the bottom hinge and the place the middle hinge in the hole at the top of the frig door.
Fasten the middle hinge.
Place freezer door on the middle hinge.
Put the freezer door in it's natural position to make putting the top hinge on possible.
This can be caused by the condenser running hot due to being dirty or the fan not running. See the link below for details on how to clean and check this.
Well there a couple things you can check. Pull away from wall and remove the lower cover over the compressor. Either the compressor is stopping on and off too much or the evaporator fan or the condenser fan is stopping while you do not know it. Tell me how hot the top of compressor is. We may have a bad motor starter and start capacitor along with overload. Let me know what you find and I may very well get you going again, Sea Breeze
Usually when the freezer is still giving cold but the frig is not receiving cold you have an ice build-up on the cold (evaporator) coil that is hidden behind the rear panel of the freezer compartment. If you push on this panel, you usually will hear a cruntch sound (this tells you there is ice/frost on the coil). There are 3 components that affect this problem: defrost timer, defrost stat, defrost heat coil. In other words, something is not working to remove the frost from the coil and it is building-up day after day (takes about 5-7 days to become full (blocked). When this happens, no air can move over the coil to take the cold away and blow it throughout the frig or freezer compartments.
To access the defrost coil or stat, you have to ren move the back panel (in the freezer) and remove all the ice with a hair dryer only or let the door open all day and allow it to melt. DO NOT PUSH OR PRY OR CHOP WITH ANY TOOL OR YOU WILL BE GARRANTEED TO PUNCTURE A HOLE IN THE COIL AND YOU ARE REALLY SCREWED. The time is either: under the front of the whole refrigerator, or in the frig compartment (towards the back or attached to the ceiling of frig compartment). If you have some experience with electrical parts, you can test to see which part is at fault. Good Luck. Macgivor
Remove the food and the ice maker from the freezer ( if equiped ) . Remove the rear freezer panel . Using a hair dryer , start in the middle , below the coils , defrosting , until you see the drain hole . Use hot water to help defrost the hole . Once water starts going thru the hole , use a small hose inserted into the hole , and blow thru , to remove any unseen debris in the drain line . Use an ALUMINUM solid wire , 14-16 guage , with the insulation completely off , and insert one end into the drain hole as far as possible without any force . Wrap the other end about 1 1/2 to 2 turns , around the black rod (defrost heater) , above the hole . When refrig goes into defrost , the heat will transfer from the heater , to the wire , keeping the hole from freezing up again .
Check the following: is the defrost timer cycling. If it is is the heater working, located behind the freezer back panel, defrosts the Evaporator coil that makes cold.
You may think the freezer is fine, but stick a thermometer in to be sure. It should be around 0 degrees F. If not, you may have iced up coils. See some other posts on this site about getting to those coils and defrosting.
no danger of fire, they(Whirlpool) run a copper heat tube through the center mullion of frig, to cut down on amount of undesirable condensation that may build up between doors, reason for extra heat can be from leaving door open too long, perhaps the coils under the frig need to be vacuumed,
HI thanks for your question, i think what your problem is . the compressor is over heating and cutted out. clean all the coils at the back of the fridge. if theres a fan motor at the back make sure its going check that thanks
