When connected, my Compaq FP 5315 monitor flashes on and off continuously, half a second on, half second off. I cannot tell if this a software or hardware problem. Prior to this problem, the monitor was excellent. Can anyone help?

Does it do the same with other PC? If it does, then you need to open it up and start looking for bad caps with bulgign/leaking top first, post back what you see so we can guide you further: see example of failed monitors due to bad caps: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

carrt33, If unit performs same way when connected to fully booted known good pc with WIN-desktop as displayed output, I would then suspect a problem with the units SMPS/CCFL inverter power supply failing to sustain running voltage to the "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamps" that provide white light so you can see all the pretty colors on the lcd panel. Read my FIXYA profile for more info and possible options you might have. Remember this! Your CCFL back-lit lcd monitor is no different than any other brand in it basic design and operation! 12fixlouie

There are also 5 or 6 bad Capacitors on on top but as far as i know the only way to fix these power boards is to replace the componets themselves as you can not buy a power board.

Compaq FP 5315 Monitor Disassembly

This is how I did it.

1- Remove the four screws in the back of the monitor. Two are in the bottom corners and two more near the bottom center ( these hold the stand in place).
2- Remove the stand.
3-The case back is held on by the four screws and a number of plastic pressure clips. After removing the screws: using a fairly wide flat bladed screw driver; insert the blade in either of the two slots on the bottom edge of the case and twist with medium force. This begins the seperation of the back from the rest of the monitor. As the crack widens, begin moving the blade of the screw driver along the widening crack (around the case edge) and twisting gently. This releases each pressure clip in turn. Separate the case back from the rest of the monitor.

I did this this way with my monitor. It works.
Good luck.
