One person used piano wire, but the diameter must be right so the cleaning beads can slide up and down on the wire when the unit is turned up and down.
The company went under and doesn't service them anymore. It's possible you could find a local repair place that might be able to do something, but there is no authorized or trained service station, and you can't get parts.
You might be able to pick up spare parts if you scour eBay long enough.
The high-voltage grid wire(s) most likely broke -- unfortunately, there is no good remedy for this -- I have repaired a half dozen of these units by replacing the grid wires with titanium wire. This is a very time-consuming, complicated, nerve-wracking repair -- not recommended. Even if the reapair is done, the unit will likely fail again, soon.
When my reapired units failed, I got units off E-Bay -- they didn't last very long either.
I'm now in the market for a more rugged ozone-generating air purifier.
Ionic Breeze machines are no longer supported. Sharper Image recalled the whole product line based on data provided by Consumer Reports as well as the EPA. Sharper Image tried legal action and lost forcing the company into bankruptcy.
The Consumer Products Safety Commission is expected to make a decision on ionizers sales in the U.S. by the end of the year. It's looking like these production won't be selling in the U.S. much longer.
