I had problems with my chimney with natural gas and wondering what I need to do was told ventilation not up to code and chimney violation... concerned with this since my home gets really cold

You should have a professional Chimney technician inspect your chimney. If there is a venting/draft problem, you could be pumping Carbon Monoxide into your house and could be asphyxiated.

How to shut off until plumber replace the leaking pipe

Find the cold water supply pipe to the tank. Most are labeled, but if unsure - turn on the closest hot water faucet and feel the temperature of the pipes connected to the water tank. Follow the coldest pipe back (moving away from the tank) until you reach the first shut off valve on that pipe and shut it off completely.
No more cold water will fill the tank and cause water to spray / leak from the pipe.
There is no need to shut off the gas really, as it is controlled by the temperature sensor on the tank - but if you insist, you should find either a flexible pipe - or a black iron pipe that enters a controller. Most have a dial marked "OFF" "ON" & "PILOT". Simply twist the dial from ON to OFF and the gas will be shut off.
Good luck!

I have an GE Waterheater taat seems to be pulling a lot of watts. I had a person from the power company come out to see why my bill was so hi. she said that the ater heater was pulling 4500 watts witch...

the elements are 4500 watts this is what most all heater come from the factory. What you need to check is the amps.

Now with that aside, whenever I have gone to a home and I am told the the water heater is running to much I think leak under the slab. I dont know where you live but if you dont have a basement. I would look hard at that.

To do the K I S S test turn off the cold water feed to the heater tonight before you go to bed. when you get up in the morning feel the hot side and if it cold thats good. Now the test. turn on the cold water valve if the hot pipe starts getting warm or hot you have a leak and the wate heater is running all the time.

Hows your water bill too? higher ?? if so that leans to a leak also

Hope this did you good.

If you need we can set up a phone chat and I can talk to you about how to fix it with out spending over a 1,000.00

Best of luck

Tom

It is leaking out of the top. not out of the hot or cold valves but out of a nut by the cold side.

Your tank is rusted out and needs to be replaced.
Link below is a troubleshoot for leaking water heater.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html

Protect yourself first:
If your tank is rusted, there is danger of rupture.
My friend welded his leaking tank, but he assumes the risk.
Ruptured tank can cause massive damage and water runs until it is shut off.

Hot water tank is under pressure because hot water expands and pushes against tank wall.
Turn off water to tank.
Turn off power supply:
Electric: turn off circuit breaker.
Gas: rotate knob to pilot so pilot stays lit but burner will not fire. To turn back on, rotate knob to ON.
Open hot side bathtub valve and relieve pressure on tank.

You can limp by with rusted tank by turning water heater on when hot water is needed.
Shower uses 5-9 gallons hot water
Bath uses 12-15 gallon hot water
Ordinary gas heater makes 41 gallons hot water per hour
Ordinary electric heater makes 20 gallons hot water per hour.

I buy water heaters at Lowes, Home Depot, Ace.
Look for scratch and dent models.
Buy drip pan for water heater.
Wrap electric heater totally with insulation except TP valve.
Buy new flexible connectors for water lines.
Offer 15% less than marked price on tank, because the store makes money on additional items.

> Most people can install their own electric heater since you just connect water pipes and electric wire, and it's done. Read link below since there are tips that help you buy and install electric.
> Generally people are nervous about installing gas water heater, so step-by-step instructions are shown on link below. Remember gas line is under less pressure than water line, so if you can install a water pipe, you can install gas line to water heater with crescent wrench, and soapy water to check for leaks.

Rheem water heater model #82V661 serial # RH0106D11663 leaking water at lower panel. Water is coming from above wiring and control panel. Is this fixable or need to be replaced? Mfg date is 01/2006

You have 240volt electric water heater
Check both elements for leaking.
Check top of tank for leaking pipes.

If water heater is leaking from side of tank, then tank is rusted out and could rupture.
This tank must be replaced.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-at-bottom-of-water-heater.html

My friend welded his tank to get more life out of tank, but he assumed the risk.

Hot water heaters are under pressure from heated water which expands.
If tank ruptures, water will flood out of tank and water will run until shut-off is turned OFF.
This causes major damage inside home.

Protect yourself first, and then let's talk more.
1) Turn off water at shut off located on cold water line above tank.
2) Turn off power to water heater:
Gas heater, rotate valve to 'pilot' so pilot is lit but burner does not turn ON.
Electric heater, turn off circuit breaker.
3) Open tub spout on hot side and let run a bit to relieve pressure.
4) Now your property is safe.

You can limp along with failed heater if leak is slow.
Turn heater ON when you need hot water.
Typical Gas heater makes 41 gallons hot water per hour.
Typical Electric heater makes 21 gallons hot water.
Shower uses 5-9 gallons hot water, bath uses 12-14 gallons hot water.
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Water-heater-reference-guide-2.jpg

If you are going to install heater yourself:
Look at label on side of old tank to identify size and particulars.
I buy ordinary heaters from Lowes and Home Depot and always buy scratch-n-dent models when possible, because superficial damage to outer tank does not lower lifespan of heaters I have installed.
Buy same size heater if it worked fine before.
Buy new flexible water connectors.
Set water heater in drip pan.
Offer 10% less than price shown. Make them deal with you. Shop Ace hardware, Lowes, Home Depot. Kick the tires since you have a bit of time.

I know you have electric heater, but many folks read these answers, so I include info on gas too.
#1 rule) tankless heaters are a rich-man's toy, because tankless will never pay you back, and will become major money pit if you encounter 1 repair. Electric tankless heaters require larger electric service box. Gas tankless require larger gas line (larger gas line, more gas consumption, bigger bill unless you cut consumption)
2) How to install gas heater:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-gas-water-heater.html
3) How to install electric heater:
Read link above because many of same steps apply to electric.
The difference with electric, is turn off power, disconnect wires, and reconnect wires exactly like before. Set electric heater directly on insulated surface like dense blue styrafoam. Cut styrafoam in circle so it fits inside dip pan. Wrap entire electric heater with insulation blanket, except don't cover TP valve.
4) Connect bare copper jumper wire between hot and cold pipes to prevent stray current corrosion which will shorten life of tank. Make sure cold water line is grounded.

I notice my ac lights flicker on my ac heater control unit, took it to a shop to have looked at an they stated I need ac heater control unit with ac lines an 800.00  So I took to another shop...

sorry but sticking a can of gas in is the cowboy way of setting up the AC ,you must use the correct machine to empty weigh the gas removed and then to vacumn and charge the oil ,then the CORRECT WEIGHT OF GAS ,not a boy racer can of trouble which is banned from resale use here in europe as owing to its dangerous and intoxicating properties. This sort of work should only be done by a professional with a robinair or similar type machine. Can you imagine a terrorist releasing this gas on a underground tube train ,Yet you buy this poison over the counter ??

My reliance sta-kleen 502 is leaking. The water is dripping on top of the pilot light, extinguishing the flame . Please advise me with step by step instructions to diagnose and attempt fix this myself....

If you have a leaking water heater there is a serious problem.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-leaking.html
Page shows how to limp along on a leaking water heater if your water heater needs replacement.

One of three things is causing the water:
1) Loose water connection on top of tank that is dripping down inside tank >> check pipes on top of tank.

2) The vent is clogged or not working correctly causing condensation inside flue pipe.
Condensation water is dripping back down inside tank.
Problem means possible CO poisoning if gas is not venting.
Look at vent pipe to see if joints are corroded.
Use long fireplace match > light match and put into draft hood at top of tank and see if smoke goes up.
Put hand at draft hood opening when water heater turns on to see if vent gas enters home.
Do same test when furnace turns on to see if furnace vent is pushing back into water heater.
Does water heater vent inside same pipe as furnace? You may need to set up separate vent for water heater if furnace gasses are pushing back into home.
Check furnace vent for obstructions.
Look at vent stack top of home to see if hood is in place.
Check if bird nest is built inside warm vent pipe.
Improper flue is top priority for getting fixed so vent gasses properly escape home.
You may have to call a plumber.
Professional plumbing forum:
http://www.thetankatwaterheaterrescue.com/forums/forum3/

3) Your water heater is rusted out.
A rusted tank has to be replaced.
It cannot be repaired.
However, before replacing tank, you do not want a tank failure where tank ruptures and water runs inside home until water is shut off.
This will cause major damage.
Protect yourself first.
Turn off water valve above tank.
Move gas knob to 'pilot' so burner is not heating water.
Open tub spout on hot side to relieve pressure on tank so it will not rupture.

Now you're protected.
Link above shows how to limp along on failed tank until you can replace heater.

You need a new gas water heater from Lowes or Home Depot
Look at label on side of you tank for gallons and btu's of your water heater.
Measure height to flue pipe so you get same height water heater, so pipes don't have to be changed.
You need a pipe wrench and teflon tape which will be wrapped on each pipe thread when pipes are reassembled.

Step1) Drain water heater using valve at bottom of tank.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-will-not-drain.html

2) Turn off gas valve going into heater.
When gas valve is perpendicular to gas line, then gas is off.
Dissemble gas line to water heater.

3) Disconnect flue pipe and support flue pipe with wire so it doesn't not fall down. Flue pipe joints should be held together at each joint with 3 screws.

4) Turn off water. Shut off valve is on COLD side.
Disconnect water pipes.

5) Move old water heater out of way.

6) Set new water heater in place. Put water heater in drip pan.

7) Connect water pipes >> cold goes to side marked cold.
Hot to hot.
Buy new flexible water connector pipes at home center for easy installation of water pipes.

8) Connect gas line exactly as it was connected before.
Home center sells flexible gas line connector for easy installation of gas line.
To test for gas leak after installation, mix liquid soap with water and put around gas line joints to see if there are bubbles.
Natural gas has less pressure than water lines, so gas pipes are easy to seal with ordinary wrench.

9) install TP pipe that runs to floor. Use old one off old heater.

10) Fill tank completely with water until water is coming out of tub spout.

11) Turn on gas, and light pilot as shown in manual.
New gas heater sometimes have small water leak when first fired up, so ignore a bit of water.

12) Save water heater manual like it is gold, and read everything in manual.

Water leaking from the bottom of the big PVC pipe parallel to the water heater

What is the leaking pvc pipe connected to? The T & P valve on the side (or top) of the tank? Or is it an incoming cold or outgoing hot water line? If you have just lit the water heater, the T & P valve may drip, but only for a little while and it will stop. The T & P (temperature and pressure relief) valve may be bad and need replaced. Turn off the incoming cold water valve and turn the gas valve to off position. Then drain the water heater using the T & P valve, it will stop draining when the water level is just below it. Remove the T&P valve and replace with new one. Use thread sealing tape on threads. Or call a plumber if not sure.

My GE window AC Model#AEL06LXQ1 Serial#AM311149P I forgot to add my question. The AC is only a year old/young. It is properly installed in a basement window with ample space outside in the window well which is fully open to the air above the window well is only covered with a window mesh type screen which keeps clean & filters out debris only. Last year around this time it was cooling the entire room nicely however displaying e8 error code intermittently which was a problem. GE refused to advise via phone and set an appt. for a tech. to come over. I did some research and reset, unplugged, waited etc. I have a dedicated electrical outlet for the AC as well. I really do not recall what I did but the unit stopped error coding e8 altogether and worked wonderfully for the rest of the hot season. I cancelled the GE tech. Now this year I am having same problem. Unplugging, waiting, changing settings, resetting to default settings, I have tried everything and to no avail. The AC will run for a while with the compressor in check and cool down the apartment but it doesn't last long, approx. 45 minutes, at best with one or 2 times exception where it held cool overnight. I don't know what to do at this point. I am not too tech-savvy. I also am unable to lift this ac out of the window. I've a back injury and though a relatively small unit, it's too heavy. Please advise. I hope you have an easy fix solution. The user manual doesn't even list the error codes! I have spent hours searching youtube videos and haven't found a solution. Hoping it's as simple as manipulation a setting. Thank you.
