To check if your Sound Driver is install or no, follow these step;
1- Go into Control Panel
2- Click on system( The System properties will open)
3- Go on Hardware TAB
4- Then you go to Device Manager TAB
*See if there is a yellow Interrogation sign near the Sound , video and game controller.

If there is this sign your will need to install your sound driver. Format windows 7 and install windows xp

Use the XP install disk to format the drive during the install process with NTFS file system. Then install XP.

If the disk does not allow you to go backwards to an older OS you need to format the existing drive in your laptop with external software on a usb or cd rom, etc. Then do the xp install. Before doing the deed make sure you download the drivers needed for the XP install on a usb stick or something.

Hi Friend, As you have mentioned that you have installed Windows XP on the system. I would like to tell you that after installing Windows XP, you have to install the drivers for the video and audio also.
Since you haven't mentioned the make of the laptop. So, I would request you to please let me know the make of the laptop so that I can provide you with the drivers for the same.
The only issue that why you are not getting sound is that we have to install the sound drivers in order to make the sound to work.

Recently i formatted my laptop (Dell latitude c400). i installed fresh copy of windows XP. i finished the installation but when i open it again after i turned it off, i think it crashed (i hear the start...

You would probly want to completely reformat and reinstall your copy of XP, if it is already crashing on a fresh copy, it most likely didn't install correctly. Make sure you format first. You can do this before you run your installation. Reboot your computer and hit f8, select the option that says command prompt with networking. when the screen comes up with the C: type in there vol you will need the volume label to format, it will display this for you and make a note of it. At the next C: type in there C: format it will ask you to enter the volume label, do this and hit enter. It will then ask you if you are sure you want to delete all data, type y and hit enter. It will go through the format process. Enter your XP cd into the drive and reboot your computer, you should now be able to reinstall windows with no previous errors or versions already installed. Hope this helps!
