Evo n610c not charging properly?

A family member just bought the laptop about 2-3 months ago, and all was well in the beginning the battery would display it had anywhere from 2-3 hours usually but would randomly power down for no reason, but when running off the ac adapter it would act fine, so just got a new battery for it a couple days ago with full charge says it should have 4 hours but today in less than an hour it did the same thing shut down with no warning, so turned it back on and the battery displays it has 4% charge (said it had 70-85% before it turned off) so now I've got 1 new battery, 1 that may have not have been bad after all, and I'm stumped though maybe it was overheating but i don't think thats the case now, drained the new battery started charging it and it stops at 29% like its full but if i unplug the power cord and plug it back in it resumes charging. Ive checked the screen saver and turned it off, adjusted power settings, so I'm about out of ideas other than charging the batteries and testing with a voltmeter as soon as i find it

1 more thing i noticed today when it shut down i was viewing a blog like page with a bunch of videos not even a min after i started the video it shut down, didn't think much of it just a random shut down but after i restarted went back to the same page started the video again and sure enough it did the same thing i don't think its only tied to vids/movies but that seems to kill it pretty quick

    Actually i fixed this last night, downloaded newer drivers for it from here got the "compaq power management" and the "system enhancement for xp" and had to test it for a day to make sure it worked, but havent had a problem yet get a good 3.5-4 hours use now,(never heard such a thing before) and to think this laptop was released this way such idiots to release a product u can hardly use with a new battery until you update drivers/software, jeez

The battery is fully charged and loses the charge within 15 minutes of being fully charged. Battery is 18 months old!!!!! Help

Simple fix turn on the puter on the logo screen press F10 to go into bios setup page scroll over to battery calibration on the tabs on top you will see HDD and Battery choose battery.
Now hit calibrate.
1- Recharge
2- Discharge
2- Recharge

Let the puter complete all of the sessions without interruptions.
That will calibrate your battery to charge correctly. thanks.

Compaq evo n610c battery not charging

Hello All;
I used to have these same problems. I replace my BIOS battery, which I know was dead, because all settings get reset when I unplug the power and remove main battery. You might not have to replace it if its still good. Back to the main battery problem, You have a good change of solving this by going into BIOS, and under Tools there is a Battery Calibration option. Do the calibration for the main battery and-or other optional batteries attach and it will most likely solve the problems. This calibration process will take a long time; 1-charge, 2-discharge, 3-recharge, so leave it over night or however.

There was a mention of updating BIOS. This could solve the problem too, because BIOS controls the charging unit. Also, make sure you have Compaq Power Management install on your OS, (download at hp.com).

One note: it will not charge if the battery is about 93% or higher. 93 is not exact, but close to 90%. so test by discharging to below 90% and it will start charging again.

If anyone tries this, leave a post of your success or failure.

Evo N610c Laptop - auto shutdown?

If you had the adapter checked out, then it has to be the power input to the motherboard (where you plug the adapter in). I have one of these laptop's as well, but my problem is that the battery is completely drained and won't change. Never the less, you might be able to find a replacement motherboard from ebay for fairly cheap.
