PS3 not reading discs.

My 80gb PS3 was the model released in August 2007. I have owned it since December 2007, however my warranty has run out. Just recently, the PS3 stopped reading discs of all kinds - CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, Games, etc. So, knowing my warranty was out, I took the console apart to see if I could see any apparent problems.

While inserting a Blu-Ray disc into the drive, I could see that the Blu-Ray laser was shining, however no discs were being read successfully. I've also re-formatted the PS3 completely (3 hour processes). Still, it did not read discs.

At this point, is it a hardware problem? If so, is it the laser? The laser mechanism? Or is it software (drivers)? Any help/suggestions for repair would be appreciated.

Hey man, you can try this....

1. download and install a psn game or game demo
2. put in the disc of the game or video you want to play or watch
3. load the psn game or demo as if you were going to play it
4. quit the demo as soon as you get to the start menu of it
5. go and play or watch the game or video you wanted to, sucka, cause it works now!!!

I hope this works for you, and if it does, spread the word!

Okay, this is a REALLY common problem. It's more likely than not that dust is on your lens. Best bet is to buy a Laser Eye Cleaner disc and hope that fixes the problem. If not than you will have to contact sony. If your still under warranty they will fix it for free. if the warranty has expired, then they will charge you a repair fee

PS3 stop reading disks? heres how to fix it.

So your shiney black pearl stopped reading discs huh? Now you are wondering if you can fix it because A)You are out of warranty and don't wanna pay almost 200 bucks to have it fixed or B) You are under warranty but don't wanna be without your PS3 for almost a month or longer .... Maybe you casn fix it on your own, if the problem is simple enough.

Sometimes the PS3 won't read discs simply because the lens is dirty, to find out if thats the case insert a game or blu-ray disc ... take careful note of the disc's 'label' as you put it in ... once it doesn't read after 10-15 seconds eject it ... if the disc's label hasn't moved your blu-ray drive's 'motor' is broken. Best bet is to send back to Sony and pay em. Or take the PS3 apart and try to replace the whole blu-ray drive.

If you remove the disc and notice it has moved your lens is probably dirty. This you 'can' fix yourself. First give the PS3 a GOOD cleaning. Vacuum it, blast it with a can of compressed air, vacuum again. Try disc.

Didn't work? Try a lens cleaner kit.

Didn't work? Time to get your hands dirty ... open the PS3 up (at your own risk) and clean the laser manually with pure alcohol and a q-tip. (video tutorials are on youtube.com)

Disc read errors are our main problem. It isn't some full blown epidemic but IS becoming worse by the day. My reasoning for this problem is simple: The PS3 is a dust MAGNET. I'm betting 90% of the disc read errors are cause by dust and dirt and pet hair getting in the machine and making the lens dirty or causing actual failure of the drive motor itself.

I love the PS3 and wish it didn't fail for anyone, especially this month with great titles almost here, but it happens. Happened to me on April 1st and I found out my blu-ray drive motor failed. A dirty lens I woulda fixed on my own. We really need a good blu-ray cleaner kit to come on the market in all major retail stores.

Peace PS3 fans.

Playstation 3 does not read CD

The little laser that reads a disc inside the PS3 may be dirty, damaged or broken. Take it down to your local tech store/where you bought it from and ask them about the laser. If your PS3 is still under warranty and you still have the receipt, simply exchange it.
Hope this helped.

Ps3 not registering disc's

Hi there my PS3 experienced a similar fault (40gb) & I would recomend you contact Sony PS3 Helpline as explained below.
This fault was fixed by contacting Sony Helpline directly & explaining the fault (laser/hard drive damaged). They agreed to fix this fault free of charge & honoured my warranty as I bought this system in January 2007 by faxing them proof of purchase. They arranged to collect my PS3 via courier & advised that it will be returned within approx 3 weeks along with an extended 3 month warranty. I have to say that Sony Helpline were very helpful & their customer assistance was excellent & if your PS3 does breakdown I would recomend that you contact the Helpline first to enquire if they can assist with the problem before seeking to have this fixed at a potential cost of £100.00 upwards by independant PS3 fixers.

Can i transfer files from my 40gb ps3 to a 80gb ps3?

yeah you can by getting an external HDD. transfer the files from the 40GB to the external HDD and then plug it into the 80GB. and then just copy all the files from the external HDD to the 80GB PS3.

(yeah takes time but its the only solution since they don't allow the consoles to connect together.)
