Apple Video Rentals on Video ipod

I purchased 2 movie rentals from the iTunes store only to find out after I payed for them and downloaded them that they won't work on my video iPod because I purchased it in October 2007. It is not the new Classic Video but rather the generation before that. My friend has an ipod touch and the movies transferred from my laptop and played fine on the touch. Do I have to buy a new ipod or can I get rentals to play on my video ipod. I know how to use isquint, handbrake, mpegstream clip etc. I converted the files to a format I thought would work but the videos come up in quicktime pro with a blank screen. The file appears to be there, it's 1hour and 40 minutes but no video or audio just blank screen that the slider goes across until 1 hr 40 min. mark.

    Hi Ekse,

Thanks for trying. Please reread my post you missed many of the details.

I did not purchase the rentals in October 2007 (iTunes movie rentals
did not exist then). I purchased the video ipod in Oct. 2007. I
purchased the movie rentals from the iTunes store in Feb. 2008.
Rentals do work fine on the new ipod Touch and Classic ipods. My
question was how to get them to play on the regular video ipods (Gen 5)
rather than the Touch or new classic video ipods.

The software packages I mentioned in my post are video conversion
packages. The AVS conversion software you mentioned looks good but as
I mentioned I already have Quicktime Pro and the others so I don't need
to purchase another conversion package unless it can do something these
can't. I went to the cnet link you posted (thanks for trying) but it's
not anything different than what I already can do. Also I have a
Macintosh and AVS is only for Windows. In fairness
though, I did not mention that in my original post and I should have.

I do appreciate you trying to answer the question and I know it's a
tough one. I am hoping someone out there has an answer. The apple
store experts did not, but I've found they don't always know (or are
willing to tell) how to solve such issues, other than "buy a new ipod"
    :) .

If you want to play Apple video freely, you may have to use a DRM removal tool to get rip of DRM protection and convert videos to DRM-free MP4 format at first. Since all videos that you purchased or rented from iTunes stores are combined with fairplay DRM protection, it can be played on Apple devices only. Fortunately, now you can use such DRM Media Converter for Windows to crack DRM protection and convert videos with all audio tracks, subtitles at faster speed with lossless quality. After conversion, it will be much easier for you to enjoy all these videos on any devices freely.

You purchased RENTALS in OCTOBER 2007, that is about 4 months ago, The files shouldnt be playable anymore?

The movie was RENTED? not bought, it shouldnt work, so you need to buy a movie, so it doesnt get blacked out after the rental time is up.

Incase there is a software fault in the ipod you could try to perform a restore if you havent yet.

  • 1. Make sure you've reinstalled the latest version of iTunes.
  • 2. Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer.
  • 3. After a few moments, it will appear in the source list in iTunes.
  • 4. Select your iPod in the source list and you will see information about it appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes windows.
  • 5. Click the Restore button. You will be prompted with one or more restore options that may prompt iTunes to automatically download of the latest iPod Software. The 4 possible restore options are:

    • Restore Option 1: Restore - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod.
    • Restore Option 2: Use Same Version - Restores with same iPod Software version already on iPod, even though a newer version is available.
    • Restore Option 3: Use Newest Version - Restores with latest iPod Software version on your computer.
    • Restore Option 4: Restore and Update - Restores with latest iPod Software version on your computer.

  • 6. A message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator's name and password.
  • 7. A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will instruct you to leave iPod connected to your computer to complete restore.
  • 8. During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
  • 9. After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

How to remove DRM protection from iTunes movie rentals to MP4

As most iTunes users know, iTunes not only allows users to purchase classic films or popular videos from its store but also provide rental service for the users. People are more likely to rent a movie than buy one, that means cost less.
However, low cost also has its drawbacks. Once you've started to watch the movie, you have 24 hours to finish watching the movie (even if you start watching before the download is complete). You can watch the movie as many times as you want within this 24-hour period. The rented movie will expire when either the 30 day or 24-hour limit is reached. Once the rental expires, the movie is automatically deleted. You must re-rent and download the movie to view it after your rented movie has expired.
So in order to keep iTunes movie rentals for long time with MP4 players while not online, the rented files needed to be converted with an appropriate program.
    1. Download a converter program like M4V Converter Plus for Win. Install the program by double-clicking on the installation file after download. Finish the installation, click the icon and launch it.
    2. Click the Add Movies in top left corner, then you will see the pop up windows which will show you all the iTunes purchases and rentals. Find the file you want to convert and click OK button.
    3. The added movie rentals will show up on the main window. And then set the output as you need. Here we choose Same as source for MP4 from the output profile list.
    4. Click Convert button to start the iTunes movie rentals to MP4 conversion.
