On these camcorders the "RCA" video jack is a switching jack. This is so the cam will record from an ext video source instead of live video. Try exercising this switching lack by repeatedly plugging in and unplugging an rca video cord. This may be a solution to your problem.

This is usually caused by a defective CCD image sensor and can be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

I have a sony handycam ccd-trv108 ntsc and the image on the lcd screen and the viewfinder is completely dark you could see the menu and everthing just not the image maybe the lens please help!!!!!!

O heck my camera too went like this, it turned out to be the lamp in the camera that lights up both camera screens, everything looked really dark with out that like, and wow not cheap mend for me, as they charge a bit for the bulb about £4 in UK, but the man who does the job must be paid around £60 per hour, and that hurt, now do you need a box of hankies as I still got couple left.

possible ccd issue.screen indicators for sure is ok, and viewfinder would show same black screen.this model is included in a recall by sony because of a defect in the ccd imaging sensor years back.but sad to say the program (and even the extension for it) is no longer available for all affected camcorder models. now it only includes the dsct1 and dscf717 dig cams.i.m sorry this unit would need replacement of the ccd imaging sensor.hope this info helps.thanks.

Sony had a certain issue with the CCD chip on this camera. If it's this issue, they'll fix it free plus $20 until March 2010.

I have a Sony mini DV DCR-HC40 NTSC camcorder

do u see anything in lcd or viefinder in record mode if not only black blank view or distorted view then

Actually u are a victim of BAD CCD see this link below

this un usual battery is consumed by Faulty CCD chip and this lens cap warning is also sign of the same problem

http://www.imaging-resource.com/badccds.html

but good news is all brands are doing this free of charge repairs sony, fuji, canon , olympus all, some models have service advisories issued and some are not noticed as all do not complain so u can get it repaired free even if u are out of warranty and even if ur camera is not on service advisory list tell them abt BAD CCD and they will understand and take ur repairs free of charge do not accept any charges for repairs as it is the manufacturing fault of CCD units tell them u know about it !

pls dont waste time see the service centre in ur area and email or give them a call see the link below for support in ur area

Assuming you don't see any video through the viewfinder, it could be that the CCD has died on that camcorder. It happens, though not frequently.

If the video though the viewfinder is clear, there might be some sensor on the lens ring to indicate a lens cap, or an automatic lens cap not properly disengaging when put in record mode.
