I have a 96 Lantra, and I have the code. But even after I disconnect the battery, or undo the fuse it does let me enter the code. It just displays 1111. It may be cheaper to just fit a replacement stereo unit.
I cant see why a stamped serial number would be damaged on a stereo....it dont touch anything...unless its been deliberatly damaged.
Fit a new stereo..very easy and prob a better sound quality.

A Hyundai dealership will help you. The code is an anti theft feature. They can look up the code for your vin number and reset it. Check your owners manual if you have one. The previous owner may have written the code down somewhere.
Radios have a theft-proof system that freezes the radio if
power is
interrupted. It was designed that way to prevent theft of the radio. The
downside is your radio will be locked if you disconnect the
battery for any reason, or if the battery dies.
When you restore power, it will say ‘CODE‘ on the
display.
When the radio displays CODE, you may enter the
code using the preset radio station buttons
For instance, my number is 1615, so when I get the CODE
on the
radio’s display, I press the radio preset button 1, then the radio
preset button 6, then the radio preset button 1, then the radio preset
button 5.
If your radio says OFF, leave the ignition on in the
first position
for 2 1/2 to 3 hours in order for it to display CODE. In certain models
you can clear the OFF state by pulling the fuse for the radio (#7 in
my car). That’s a bit simpler than leaving the ignition in the first
position for a couple of hours — particularly if you don’t have a
garage. enter the code with the above procedure, if the problem still persist, am afraid you will need to take it to electronics repair workshop for diagnose, i advice you do not do it alone in other not to complicate issues.
The code will not be in the manual unless the previous owner wrote it there. Call the dealership that the car was bought from or if you have no clue as to where that was call the manufacturer. Have your VIN and the radios serial number.
First, you should remove this listing as it is also the info (Vin code) needed to make a key for your car. Second, go to the Hyundai dealership, they can get it for you.
Switch off the stereo so that the date and time show on dash. Press and hold the volume button and the AS button together for about 5 seconds. It should now ask you to input the code. Do this by using the numbers 1 2 3 & 4 on the stereo. When the code is entered, press and hold the AS button on its own and wallah, your cd player is up and running

i have the same problem as well but on a 2003 ascent.
