Personally, I format my memory cards every time I download pics from them. Among other things, this ensures that there are no pics remaining on the card.

As for the SD600, press the MENU button and use the left- and right-arrows to select the Setup menu (the middle icon which always reminds me of silverware). Use the up- and down-arrow to select "Format". You probably don't need to do a low-level format very often, unless you run into problems with a particular card.

After downloading the pics to your computer, insert the card into the camera, go into the menu and find "format" and follow the on-screen instructions.

Canon sd600 wont read 16gb memory card

No. The SD600 works with MMC and SD cards, which max out at 2GB. It will not work with SDHC cards such as your 16GB card.

I bought a new SD card for my powershot SD600. I have tried two different cards and they both say they can be formatted. What is the problem?

Bet it's a brand new SDHC card.
There are several possible causes for "memory card locked", "memory card error", or "no memory card". Some include trying to use of a 4GB SDHC card with an older camera made before SDHC format came out. Others include problems with the tiny slide switch on the side of the card, or the electrical contact switch internal to the camera. The problem may also arise from simple formatting problems if the card has never been formatted in the camera (note that this will also erase the card). Troubleshooting tips for this problem may be found at this link.

My canon sd600 says Memory card error?? any

I'm afraid that's exactly what it could be. A bad card which can't be formatted. Occasionally digital warnings can get it right, Occasionally.

Memory cards don't last forever and depending on it's use and treatment they can die sometimes somewhat prematurely. Just removing the card whilst it''s being accessed by the camera can ruin a card for good. Just check that the record inhibit tab isn't in place on the card. It's a little tab which when closed will stop the pictures stored on it from being accidently erased. Although usually the camera will say protect and not error.

I'd be inclined to try formatting the card in another camera if you can borrow one for a few minutes. Whatever you do, don't try formatting it in your computer. Or borrow a known good card and try it. If it works it would appear your card is dead.

Did a reformat while pictures still on the memory.....

If you haven't done anything to the card since you formatted it, you stand a good chance. Do a Google search for "data recovery software" and select a program for your computer and operating system. Put the card into a card reader attached to your computer and run the program.

Getting pictures to be viewable on camera from memory card

Yes, you can easily copy back the pictures to the memory card through a card reader, but first you should reformat the card on the camera so that necessary folders can be created. There you'll find something like DCIM folder, create a new folder and copy back the pictures on that folder.

Reformatting an SD memory cardf

You can format the card in your camera while not connected to your computer. In fact it's recommended to do so. Read your instruction book to find out how. It should be a selection available from your "menu" button when in image review mode. Select "low-level" or "full" format, not "quick" format (quick format is only good for erasing pictures).

The following alert appears, "Unable to use card. Format?".

The following conditions are presumed: - File system of the card was changed by formatting with PC. - The card was formatted with other memory card device. Basically we recommend the users to format by using the camera. (All the data in the memory card will be erased.) As the memory card may have defects in itself, please try other memory card, if you have other memory cards.
