Hi there, you are very near in the solution. Just today i solve the same problem manually. When the system ask this message "where I want the image saved " 1st select the path -- My computer/C:/program file/HP scan jet/ select here the Scanner Icon and press Ok. I mean just follow the location of installation file of your scanner. After that scan the image or else , you will get the success. Thanks & waiting for your success feedback.
once you use a for image scan & after that you use for pdf. When you chance the sequence every time you have to change the location. Because Image is scanning by the canon software but when you make a pdf file from scanner that time the system follow the adobe pdf reader not the scanner. Hope you understand. Thanks.
Its not a problem or nothing wrong. You just go for uninstall the all in one even the software also from the MAC. After restart again install that both. Or Please contact the service center. Thanks.

I have tried your suggestion. Actually on a Mac, you don't have "
My computer/C:/ program file/HP scan jet/ select here the Scanner Icon
and press Ok". but I took it that you meant: "select 'Scanner Output'. This worked the first time I tried it, (when I had chosen to produce an image file) but not the second time when I had chosen to produce a pdf file. It just wasn't there, as previously. And in any case, even if it does work, why can't I just choose where I want the image? Why do I have to do go to the trouble of moving the image to where I want it?
Summary so far: (i) Problem: Scanjet G4050 used with Macbook Pro produces no scanned image in chosen folder (or anywhere else); (ii) Solution: choose only "Scanner output" folder; (iv) Result: still doesn't work (or only once in many tries); and (v) anyway it's ridiculous to request choice of folder for image if only "Scanner output" can be used; (vi) Is the truth that this scanner is incompatible with a Macbook Pro?
