When running DSL it is required that all telephony devices have a filter on them in order to remove static and other noise on the line. Sometimes depending on the company will put inline filters for the lines that a telephony only and have 1 dedicated line for the dsl signal. If this is not the case then filter devices are needed.
In your case, i woudl ask if you are using one jack from which a splitter comes out with one line to the DSL modem and 1 line to the fax. If this is the case then is there a filter between the splitter and the fax? if there is not, then you will need to add one.
so it should look like this:
Wall
|
Splitter --------------------------------DSL MODEM----------------Computer
|
|___DSL_Filter___________FAX
if you only have the fax coming from the jack then you just need the filter and looks like this
Wall----------DSL-FILTER-----------------FAX
If you have a corded telephone that you can use to make sure that there is signal on the line that would help in your troubleshooting. When you put the phone on the lien if you hear any static or hissing then you dont' have a filter or the filter you are using is bad. Place a new filter inline as shown above and try the phone. if no hiss or static then hook to fax and you shoudl be good unless the fax is damaged.
if you look at what i have presented, those are the 2 "hookups" you would be looking at.
either you have 2 walls jacks, one for the dsl and one for the fax or you have one wall jack where you would use a splitter to have a line to each.
the computer equipment on the setup doesn't relaly matter other than how you have the dsl modem connected.
with out futher explaination as to how you have your lines setup we cannot help you. answer the following questions:
1) does the phone line go straight to the fax machine from the wall? if not does the same line supply the dsl modem and the fax?
2) does the phone line going to the fax machine have a filter between it?
3) if your phone line comes from the jack to the dsl modem, is there a seperate line going to the fax? if not does the line from the fax come from the DSL modem?
4) do you have one phone line dedicated to the dsl and one dedicated to the fax or does the fax share the same line and number as the dsl?
----------------
if you read and follow my first instructions exactally, i gave you all the line testing and layouts best suited for your connection.
this is your best layout if the telephone jack being used is for both the dsl and the fax
Wall
|
Splitter --------------------------------DSL MODEM----------------Computer
|
|___DSL_Filter___________FAX
this is the best layout if the telephone jack being used is just for the fax
Wall-------DSL_FILTER--------------FAX
also if you have a phone on the same line then you would need a three way splitter to do this correctly which woudl look like
WALL----------------SPLITTER------------------------DSL MODEM---------------ROUTER---------COMPUTER
| |________________DSLFILTER___________Phone
|
|____________DSLFILTER_____________FAX
fixya removed my white space
the part
| |________________DSLFILTER___________Phone
|
|____________DSLFILTER_____________FAX
should be from the splitter not the wall
ask i woudl have assumed you have CABLE internet not DSL but i had taken your word for it. now that, that misunderstanding is out of the way.
since you said that you have a traditional land line as well other than the comcast voip phone, disconnect the fax from the comcast voip line. remove the phone from the line and place the traditional land line in the port for the fax machine not the ext. test the fax. if this works, then place the phone on the EXT line and check dial tone. if this works then your land line works. next you need to check the comcast.
connect the cordless phone to the comcast voip line where the fax would be connected. check if you have dial tone. if there is none, then unplug the cable modem for 10 seconds and reconnect, give it time to boot and try again. this will power cycle the system. check for dial tone, if you do not have dial tone you need to call comcast. if you do then connect the fax and test.
if the comcast has a dial tone to the cordless and the fax does nto to the land line or the comcast there is a chance the fax machine's telephony socket is damaged.
you are welcome and no your not useless. not everyone is expected to know this stuff nor the full names. i should have went with my gut about having comcast cable not dsl but i didn't want to offend. if i would have asked for the clarification i would have helped with this quicker. good luck and take care

Well, the only issue I see here is with the wiring and connections that you have made after moving stuff. Please make sure to connect the cables to the correct place.
Well the main line that comes from your DSL provider will go into a splitter and from the splitter you have two outputs. Phone line and DSL line. Phone line will further go into another splitter and form there you need to connect it to the land line phone and the other one to your FAX.
DSL line will connect to your ISP modem to provide internet connectivity.
Hope this helps.

Hi there, first i like to know your country. I want to inform you that, landline does not activated by born for FAX. If you want to use fax then you have to inform you telephone exchange & they will enable the fax facility on your landline number. After that you able for Fax sending & receiving. 4 in 1 or just a fax machine there is nothing to do with it. If your connection is FAX facility enabled then just plug on the fax machine ,connect the phone line and use it. Thanks & waiting for your feedback.

I don't think Rajeep was taking all the info I provided into account. Please have someone else look.
I guess I haven't been clear enough. I have tried all different hook ups, and can't seem to find the right one. I need someone to give me the correct hookup info. from DSL to phone to fax, etc. Is that more clear? Hope so. If not back to drawing board :(
I don't seem to be getting anywhere here. I have never used a splitter before and can't understand why I would now. I forgot to mention that I do have a Linksys router that I use for my lap tap but I haven't used that in weeks. Currently the router is only plugged to the wall and no computer hardware. Is this the issue?
OK. This my setup....
Wall cable connected to Cable Modem...............
From Modem.......Ethernet connected to my pc....
From Modem.....Telephone line connected to fax.......Line 1
From phone cordless handset station..........Telephone line connected to Fax Ext
I get a dial tone, but the fax doesn't detect a dial tone when I attempt to send.
connect the cordless phone to the comcast voip line where the fax would be connected. check if you have dial tone. if there is none, then unplug the cable modem for 10 seconds and reconnect, give it time to boot and try again. this will power cycle the system. check for dial tone, if you do not have dial tone you need to call comcast. if you do then connect the fax and test.
if the comcast has a dial tone to the cordless and the fax does nto to the land line or the comcast there is a chance the fax machine's telephony socket is damaged.

I did this and had a dial tone on phone and not on fax. So it appears that the fax has a damaged telephony socket, right?
Thanks for your help. Sorry to be so useless.
