Frigidaire FRT21H8 Top Freezer Refrigerator Logo
Anonymous Posted on Feb 17, 2010

I have a Frigidaire refrigerato with top freezer that I keep on the back porch. The freezer has quit working completely. The temperature has been below freezing lately and I was wondering in this has something to do with freezer not working.

Good day,
Yes, Frigidaire specifically states any temperature below 55 degrees will unbalance the machine causing the freezer to warm.

This is due to the fact that the thermostat that runs the entire machine is located in the fresh food section. When it reaches it's normal temperature it shuts the entire machine down.
In cold weather it could stay off for the best part of the dy, if not the entire day.

As well. on some model Frigidaire's, they makes a winterizing kit.
It is wired to the thermostat in a manner that heats the thermostat artificially in cold weather to cause it to cycle more.
Contact your local appliance parts house to see if they carry the kit for your machine.

Testimonial: "Thanks,Guru, that seems to be exactly what has happened. I'll try to get the kit asap. Thanks again for solving my problem."

I understand that the outside temperature should be a minimum temp of 55 to keep the refrigerator/freezer working properly, but is there a maximum temp that will affect a refrigerator? We have one in our garage and it gets extremely hot in there in the summer (approx. 85) will that harm it?

UPRIGHT FRIGIDAIRE ff FREEZER HAS A FROZEN SECTION ON THE INSIDE BOTTOM-BACK WALL. IS THAT NORMAL?

Possible fix is to completely defrost the freezer. Take out all the food and put into coolers or wrap in blankets. Then you can speed up the defrosting by placing pots with boiling water in the freezer and close the doors to let the heat do it's job and rotate more hot water as it cools. This can take several hours to get a total meltdown inside and out. Some freezers have internal drain tubes that freeze up and they can take quite awhile to thaw. You may need some old towels to soak up any overflow on the ground. Once you feel everything is up to room temperature you can wipe down the inside with a mild bleach cloth to kill any old bacteria. Hope it works for you.

What is the normal fluctuation range of a top freezer in a freeze-refrig combo? That is if I set the temperature of the freezer a 0 F, at what temperature should the freezer come on to keep the air i

Hello Richard;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

The normal range for a freezer is -2 to +2 Deg. F.

The normal range for the fresh food section is 35 to 40 Deg. F.

If you set your freezer at 0 Deg. F. it will stay at 0 Deg. F.
When the freezer temperature drops below 0, your compressor will kick in to bring the freezer back to 0 Deg. F.

Frigidaire freezer always running

Hi Edward - Modern freezers have increased storage capacity and keep more even temperature that may require the compressors to run longer but use less energy. Was the unit disconnected previously for any reason? If so, freezer requires a minimum of 4 hours to cold down completely. Confirm that the temperature control is not set too cold and that the door is not being open frequently. A dirty, cracked, worn or poorly fitted door gasket can allow warm air to enter the unit causing it to have to run longer to remove the warm air. Leaks in the door seal will cause freezer to run longer in order to maintain desired temperature. Cleaned the gasket, if it is too damage then it will need to be replace. You can check and see if the door seal is bad by, placing a dollar between the gasket and cabinet. Check to see if the door is being blocked by anything stopping it from closing properly. If nothing is stopping the door then replace gasket. Keep in mind that there should also be at least 4-6 in of air space on all sides of the unit. If freezer is built in or has items stored on top that cover the unit, the can cause long run times, high temperature in the freezer and premature failure to the unit. Do not block the toe grille on the lower front of the unit. Sufficient air circulation is essential for the properly operation of your freezer, about 3 inches around the unit.

New freezer not even two weeks old. Seems to run a lot. Is set at 4 preset from factory. Could weraise setting?

Yes, go ahead and raise the setting. Keep in mind the location of the freezer effects it's run time. If it is in a hot shed or porch it will run more than if it is in a cool house.

Hello,

You may wait to see if it gets cold, but more than likely you are going to have to remove the rear freezer panel and defrost it there UNPLUG THE UNIT BEFORE STARTING. While you are there the very most common problem is a loose connection going to your defrost heater. Your defrost heater is located behind that rear wall under the coils and looks similar to an oven element, Trace the black wire at the end of the element and disconnect the wire at the connectors. Look inside of the connectors for ice. Melt that out and reconnect being sure you feel it snap in..it takes quite a bit of pressure to get them in. Melt any ice out of the coils keeping in mind that the plastic will melt at a very low temperature so be careful.

Thanks

I bought a model FRT18B5JB2 in August 'o9 to put out in the garage for extra cooling and freezing room This winter the freezer is not keeping items frozen. They are no thawed completely, but they are not...

Refrigerators do not work correctly in the winter in unconditioned space.
It is too cold for the unit to run normally. The compressor oil gets sluggish and strains the compressor when it does run.
The thermostat never warms enough for the unit to come on and run.
Therefore the temperatures in fresh food and freezer stay at the top end of the set point. This would cause about 42-43 in fresh food and around 18-25 in the freezer.
In the spring time it should start running correctly again.
