I've noticed that I get a "Print Spooler" Icon in the task bar near the clock on my XP based PC. Double-clicking here brings up a window with all current and waiting print jobs. Just highlight the job/document you want to kill then click cancel. This is the proper way to kill a print job. There should also be a printer icon in your task bar that allows you to send instructions to the printer, it's part of the software that you install with the printer. You can often cancel jobs there too. You may not see these icons if you have the task bar set to hide inactive icons
The print spooler is there to insure your printer prints all jobs sent to it even if the printer is interrupted by lack of paper/ink or power outage. Most printers can't store the whole job in internal memory so the print spooler holds onto it and sends it as the printer needs it.
