The dishwasher was purchased new 14 years ago and has been problem free. The wash cycle doesn't seem to be working and I'm not sure if any water is flowing into the appliance. The dial turns on its own for a delayed start and at first the dishwasher sounds as if it is starting normally. But the wash cycle never really starts and you don't hear the water being sprayed. Instead the dial just turns and there is a dry cycle. When completed, not all of the water has drained out...there is water in the bottom of the tub.
Most American made dishwashers have one pump to force water through the spray arms and drain the water when the pump motor reverses the direction running the impeller in the opposite direction. If you pull the washer out you need to check for easy fixes first, which involves making sure the drain hose is not plugged or kinked. If you can trace your hose back to the garbage disposer, remove the hose clamp and hose to clear any obstructions going into the disposer and in the drain hose. Second make sure the screen is clean under the bottom spray arm. If no problems are found you will need to unplug the washer and remove the pump. It could be some object jamming the impeller which you should be able to turn it freely. The impeller could be seized or the motor could be defective. If you cannot free or fix the impeller you will have to replace the pump. If the motor will not turn and the impeller turns the motor make sure the motor voltage on it using a volt meter. If you have voltage during the wash cycle then the motor is bad. If you do not then the timer circuit could be defective. Without knowing the model number I cannot tell you if the motor and pump are separate or replaced as a module. However, fix the unit because the new units are not as reliable.

Your gonna have to pull the dishwasher out and shut off the water line. Then disconnect the water hose and get you a bucket. Then turn on the water line to see if water comes out. If water comes out strong then your water supply line is good, which means your inlet port on the dishwasher is clogged or hard water has clogged the little holes in the dishwasher arms. Dishwashers are meant to leave a little water remaining at the bottom to keep the sensor from burning up.
