You are correct, you will need to download 2 applications from the canon website in order to use your scanner. you will need the drivers which are here http://www.canon.ca/english/index-customersupportdownloads.asp You will need to navigate to the downloads then select the model you have. The two programs are the LIDE Driver for windows then you will need to install the Toolbox software. you will require to reboot your computer between the installs so it's best to download both to your computer then install the LIDE and then the Toolbox.

did you install the drivers? they were probably downloaded compressed- you need to look at your download list and install from there. don't know if vista refers to it as install wizard, as xp does, but check that the download was actually opened and installed. otherwise, it's sitting on your hdd doing nothing useful. i'm not familiar with vista, know a lot of people who tried it and switched back to xp. still waiting for the user reports for w7. supposed to be a great improvement on vista! so we wait and watch! anyway, check out whether your patch for your scanner actually was installed! good luck!
I'm not sure if this will work on the lide 20. I have an lide 35, and there are no 64 bit drivers for it. I downloaded and installed the drivers for the lide 60, told the computer to manually find the lide 60 drivers for my scanner, and installed the canoscan toolbox for vista 64 bit. Works like a champ.

or www.usa.canon.com and search up your scanner model and then click on driver tap, then OS then you can download the driver and free software from there.
