I keep getting an error message stating yellow ink is empty, even though I just installed a brand new HP ink cartridge. There is also ink remaining in the previous yellow cart. Spent almost 3 hrs with HP online chat tech which resulted in them telling me it was a hardware issue and oh, by the way, your warranty expired two months ago. Want to buy a new printer? Have checked for solutions on-line and the best I have been able to do is reset by removing the power cord, holding down the OK and Help buttons while replacing power cord. Will then show yellow cart is almost empty and allow me to print one picture before the empty ink cart message displays again. Can anyone help

Here is one of the solution for the issue.
check if the serial number of the printer starts with MY66xxxxxx, MY67xxxxxx, or MY68xxxxxx. If your printer has a combination of any one of the above mentioned serial number, then try to replace the ink cartridge and you can replace the printer if it is covered under warranty.
The yellow ink sensor could be corroded and giving a false message.
Here is the content of the chat, hopefully it helps you too! Christina is the tech support person.
Christina: Let us perform some steps to isolate the issue and find a fix for it.
Christina: Please perform the following steps and let me know the message that will be displayed on the printer.
Christina: A. - Press and hold the “*” key.
B. - Press the “#” key and release both keys.
Display should say “Enter Special Key Combo”
C. - Press and release in sequence the “1”, “2” and “3” buttons.
CustomerName: ok
CustomerName: screen says "support" R0631M
Christina: Fine.
Christina: 2. Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu”.
Christina: 3. Press and release the “OK” button.
Christina: 4. Display should say “Hardware failure status”. If not there already, Arrow Key over to “Hardware failure status”,
Christina: 5. Press and release the “OK” button.
Christina: 6. Display should say “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.
CustomerName: yup
Christina: 7. Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.
CustomerName: ok
Christina:
8. Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so
that, either the “Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or,
the “Ink System Failure” screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT
THIS STAGE.
CustomerName: ok
Christina: 9. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.

Christina:
10. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the
power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the
printer
CustomerName: done
Christina: 11. Turn the unit on. The
printer may display message “USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER”
followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”. Press OK. The Printer will start
the “ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to
complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is
complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.
CustomerName: made a buncha noise, and it didn't print a diagnostic page
Christina: Good.
Christina: Is the error message still being displayed on the printer?
CustomerName: nope
Christina: Good.
CustomerName: should I try to print something?
Christina: Let us print a self test page to check the functionality of the printer.
Christina:
Press Setup menu on the All-in-One then scroll using the arrow key and
select Print Report then select Self Test Report.

Is it possible that I can access the area where the print head is to check for a loose cable or anything out of the ordinary? Not too worried about mucking up the machine, as it's not much good right now anyway. Thanks.
I have the exact same problem.
I have the same problem. After trying 3 different yellows it finally worked, but now after printing about a dozen pages, I have an ink system failure with an error # 0xc18a0301 and it says my yellow is once again empty.
I have had exactly the same problem, and found HP's 'Customer service desk' to be a complete waste of time.
Thanks to this site, I was able to do a 'Reset' which cured the problem for a while.
Yesterday, after printing several sheets without a problem I got the dreaded code plus 'Ink system Failure' message. All tanks are showing full, the total print count before reset was less than 300, and still is, so If the heads need replacing, that is ridiculous.
The printer is 2 years old, so out of warranty.
I had to accept a refurbished unit under warranty when my original one developed what I thought was a scanning fault. It wasn't, as this one doesn't give a clean scan edge either.
This HP 3310 multi function unit has been an expensive mistake. I had a G55 for many years before this one without any problems occuring.
I have the same problem with the Yellow Ink cartridge. The HP support team was no help. Pretty poor design that doesn't even let you print in black and white when a color cartridge is empty.
Replaced yellow cartridge after "empty" message viewed. C6180 still indicated empty...offering black as the only option. Have been at this for several hours. Help desk = none.
Tried cleaning contact ponts ...no solution.
Keep getting an error message saying that the ink was empty and we just put new ink cartridges in.
I keep getting the ink cartridge empty screen, but I just replaced the cartridges. At first it lets me continue to print if I want to use only black ink. Then a few more times and it says ink cartridge empty and will not print. Please advise on how to correct this problem.
Same problem - I have bought the more yellow and to no avail. I love this printer - it does everything I need - but need a fix for this.
I can't remember whether I bought an extended warranty or not.
I have the same problem with my HP Photosmart C6180.
I keep getting a false message that my ink cartridge is empty and that I need to replace black and cyan ink even though I replaced them both with brand new cartridges. It will not allow me to print any of my basic word documents. But when I do a "test" print or "align cartridges" from the trouble shooting page, it then prints out perfectly.
PLEASE HELP! I tried unplugging and re-installing all the cartridges and resetting everything to factory settings, still no luck.
I just bought my printer brand new less than 5 months ago at Office Depot. I am very disapointed because I thought that HP made quality products......FJ
I have also installed two new yellow ink cartridges. I would like my money back.

HP Photosmart 3310 All-in-One will not respond to print, copy, or fax.
The scan feature is still operating. The "error: 0xc18a0301" is the
same; however, the System Configuration Menu does not exist. The only
descriptions after holding down * then pressing # and entering code 1,
2, 3 are Support R0046, Information Menu, Fax Diag Menu, and Print
Tests Menu. None of these resemble parallel problem with the HP C6180,
not even the further problems. I am not tech stupid, but it just wont
work. And no, the yellow ink cartridge is not corroded or damaged in
any way. Thanks for any help that will hopefully be administered. I
have two of these computer. I'd rather not have to replace them both.
Also, on a short note, is there any way to prevent this error from reoccuring? Thanks again.
HP Photosmart 6180 All in One gave same message when all cartridges were new and status indicated cartridges were full. All test pages printed in color, and even when I chose "print in black only", color was printed. Could not get rid of the message using other suggestions. I disconnected the printer from the PC, removed all print cartridges from the printer, deleted the Print drivers completely from the PC (Windows 7 64 bit), re-downloaded and reloaded the complete set of drivers onto the PC, and then put the cartridges back in printer. This eliminated the message.
Have done all the "solutions" listed, but ink cart. are not moving out to the point that I can access them
it will not respond to any command
the printer will not respond to any command
