My Epson 740 stylus has been working fine for the past seven years.Today I replaced both ink jet cartridges. When I turn on the printer, the carrier jams against something, stops its motion, all three red lights are on and the paper red light and green on/off light begin flashing. It will not print.

Have had my 740i for at least ten years. I have noticed that even though the ink supply indicates there is ink, it does not print. Changing the cartridges has solved the problem for the moment. If I leave the printer unused for several weeks, the same thing occurs. Yesterday I changed both cartridges, one copy came out and now nothing prints. I have tried all of the cleaning tricks indicated and still no success.

Did you use Epson Genuine Cartridges? ALL…. Epson & Brother Requires Genuine Cartridges. !!!!!!!! That sounds like your problem. In Purchasing Epson's CX 5400, CX4600, & CX7400 and more, I found out that Epson does not like Generic Printer Cartridges. I also Purchased a Brother MFC-240C All-In-One InkJet Printer. That also does not like Generic Print Cartridges. Color that should be Yellow, will turn out Green, Blue Brown, etc. These printers have a CHIP that will detect if it is Generic or Genuine. When they see it’s Generic Cartridges, it will print lines thru the words, stripes across the picture and also do a mix match with the colors. It also will not let you print anything, if only one of the cartridges is empty.
I wanted to print only Black, and would not let me, because I did not have any ink in one of my cyan cartridges. Go figure.
That's what these Companies do., so they can keep selling the ink cartridges. Some Printers, are able to use Generic, and some are refillable. Some you can refill them up yourself and I heard, quite MESSY.
So I learned, thru trial and error, that you must use the ORIGINAL Genuine Cartridges for these PRINTERS. Some people say some models work fine compatible, but not mine.......
I had to replace the printer, but Epson, Lexmark & Brothers are always on sale. My Brother & Epson cost me $50.00 with Rebate. . IF YOU ARE USING GENERIC CARTRIDGES, MAYBE IT WOULD BE BETTER IF YOU DISABLE THE INK MONITOR. This is the only advice I can give you. The next step would be to disassemble the Epson, and clean the Pads/Heads. Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem.Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.

His could be because epson print jets plug up. and usualy cost more to repair than to purchase new printer. i had epson and now buy HP because hp when you replace the ink cartridge the spray jets are incorporated into the cartridge the only thing you have to be carefull of is that somel manufactures now put a chip on the cartridges to expire the units so they can sell you another even if you dont use the ink HP included so look for exp. date on new units. look into food warehouses like sams. costco, Bjs etc. they usualy have good prices on printers. sunday paper is also a good place to look.
May I know if the printer is working on any computer.
It assume to be the Black Ink Head of the Printer is decayed. I mean to say the Surface where the Ink cartridge contacted to Printer, the film also need to be replaced. Plz check it to nearby service centre.
The Stylus CX 4600 gets its jets clogged easily when you don't use it every day or so. Cycle through several times of cleaning the jets and printing the results, until it comes out right. I have had to do this as many as 6 times to get the test print to have no gaps, but eventually, it will always work if you clean them enough.
I have also had new cartridges report empty. I called the aftermarket source where I got them, and they had me return the cartidge for a free replacement. The replacement worked. Sometimes, paying 20% of the Epson cartridge price gets me junk cartridges.
