I got this one dead. There is a burnt resistor on the main circuit board ( the one with the on/off sw). Would anyone know what value it could be.

Hello,
You can determine the resistors value by reading the color code bands that are marked on it. The following picture is an example of the color codes and there values.

I got this one dead. There is a burnt resistor on - 43a78d4.gif

To show you how to read the color codes on a resistor, I am including a link to a video that will explain how to do this easier than I could probably explain it.

I hope this helps you in solving the problem. If you need further assistance please feel free to ask.

If you would not mind, please rate my help. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank You

Sorry, I forgot to mention in my post that if the resistor is burnt bad enough that you can not read the color codes, list the product brand name and the model number and I will try and locate a wiring diagram for it.

I will start searching for a schematic and hopefully have some information for you this weekend. I did find some support information for you if you are interested. The phone number is toll free at 1-800-955-0959 and here is the email link. Scroll down and you will see the shredders support information and you can also contact them via email if you need assistance in the future.

R2 is 470 ohms, 5% tolerance. probably a 1/2 Watt. Reason I know is I have mine apart and R16 and transistor Q4 dead (both - can't read value). R16 is the lowest resistor on the RHS of your photo next to the connector with the blue & white wires. Q4 is to the LHS of the relays. If you still have the shredder, please let me know.

Ah yes thats the problem indeed.
Burnt to a crisp and no hope of getting the color code I'm afraid.
Its a Fellowes DS-13C and I'll put and image on below.
the resistor is to the right of the yellow cap and just below the on/off sw.

I need to know the value of the Resistor "R1" in

Let us use a bit of logic to resolve this... I have an Axiom but it would be a lot of screws to take out to get to the part... so let us think about this. The resistor value starts with a "1" and we know it is 5% tolerance (gold). we know the resistor burnt up with likely 5 volts on it... Value could be 1000 ohms, however the voltages present (12 volts max) would NOT have burned up a resistor of 1000 ohms. The USB area is mostly 5 volts and across 100 ohms is only a quarter watt... not enough to really burn up a resistor... First thing is to MEASURE that the resistor s open... in spite of being burned, it MAY still be OK... these resistors now usually either open or remain close to their value. The resistor ALSO may be a fusible resistor intended to act as a fuse... Is the resistor open or not? is it near a resistance with a "1" as the first digit? If it is not open I suspect it is not all of the problem. In that case, look for a burned circuit trace on the board. If it is open, then MEASURE the voltage across the resistor with the power applied. If you find 5 volts, then it MIGHT be a 10 ohm used to limit the USB current to 500ma. Get back to me with your findings... I have unraveled many of these things...

Kds vs-f14

There is usually an identical resistor somewhere else on the circuit board, so if you cannot read the colors of the burnt one, you can read the colors from an identical resistor on the same board. If you just replace the resistor, it will probably just burn out again or damage another component, you have to find the cause of the resistor burning out, most likely an electrolytic capacitor failing. Look for bloated or seeping capacitors and replace those as well. Also look for broken or burnt toroid coils.

I don't recommend this, but the resistor you speak of is probably a small fuse. Try jumping out the fuse, then turn on unit for brief moment. If it powers up, fine. Replace jumper wire with 1 amp fuse. If not, take to prof. tech.

Burnt resistor

You have to check what could cause these resistors to be burnt. It might be because of caps or IC. Unfortunately, I don't have this type of circuit board. If you cannot find it, try with the same value of resistors that are placed close to these fault resisters.
