I'm having convergence problems, the three colors will not align

I've went through the steps to converge the image on the remote, when I was attenpting to align the colors the red and the blue will not quite make it all the way to some of the crosses, and when the colors do make it to the crosses they appear to be on a bit of and angle compared to the stationary crosses.

I've recieve three different answers and now I'm not sure what to do. One expert said that the convergence ICs would need to be replaced. another expert went on to say that it could be the drive to the IC or bad power. And the last expert said that if the crosses still move to check for dicolored resistors conv circuit because one of the values changed.

first, in the multipoint adjustment mode the crosses will not ever be perfectly straight==the question is do red and blue move in all directions?

Do not change the chips etc until you are able to answer this.

How do you fix convergence on a sony tv?

hello!
If convergence in your TV went out suddenly and severely, there is nothing you can "adjust". That's a parts failure, convergence amplifiers I.C. chip(s) went south. Needs repair! Period! Minor alignments could be done by applying "flash focus" or "manual convergence" off "menu", if available. Some models have "flash" only option. Anyway, make sure there is no large metal structures near the front of TV or large speakers nearby. that could convergence to go out. Try not to play with any adjustments, if severe convergence problem. you won't be able to fix it right and will corrupt memory settings for "flash" option.
thanks,
Alex.

Our tv just started having a fuzzy image and the auto focus function aborts during the red color alignment. is there a manual alignment I can do to fix it.

What does this fuzzy image look like? Does it have ghosting shadows. Of course it is possible to align red manually from the convergence menu. But first lets confirm that it is indeed a convergence related problem.

Mitsubishi RPTV has a blue shadow/image alignment problem

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projeciton sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right. And you should be able to get the grid straight.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a fix

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you are handy and can follow directions. You can get complete repair kits from TvRepairKits.com or click here. They have put together DIY repair kits that include the OEM parts and step by step photo instructions for each repair. If you are not handy or can't follow directions we would suggest calling a shop.

Tv out of foucs

These procedures are from the owners manual, go into menu and then picture quality and then: Convergence The Convergence feature lets you adjust the TV’s three tubes. When the TV tubes’ images are precisely aligned, they create the color images you see on the screen. Over time, the picture can drift out of alignment (this is normal). If your picture seems fuzzy or has a yellow tint, using Convergence could correct this misalignment. Only one convergence is needed for all inputs, regardless of the signal format. Note: Make sure the TV has been on for at least 30 minutes (TV needs to warm up for best results) before starting Auto Converge or Red/Blue Centering. When you select the Convergence feature, a submenu appears with three options: Auto Converge Automatically aligns the projection lenses to self-correct color images. You’ll see flashing squares of color dance across the screen (this is normal). Note: After performing auto convergence, use the Blue Centering and Red Centering menus to fine tune convergence in the center of the screen, if necessary. Blue Centering Aligns the blue and green images to fine-tune the picture. Red Centering Aligns the red and green images to fine-tune the picture. Note: The ability to change channels is disabled when adjusting the convergence options. The TV must be tuned to a usable signal to converge the picture.

After replacing the convergence the three colors are still not aligned

there should be a menu button on the tv itself go to picture setting and reset all three colors to the middle. if that doesn't work then you'll need a new regulator for the convergance which is about 25-50 dollars
