I have a working motherboard from a broken screen LCD.
The smoke could have been from the capacitors in the power supply and not the main board. I would suggest to inspect the power supply as well for bulging or leaky capacitors that fail most of the time.

You cant use a normal universal remote, i thried them all. The only ones that work are Logitech harmony remotes, they are almost $150 from bestbuy/ futureshop.
