The monitor is still working because whenever i try to get my laptop to show on it shows the correct screen but then goes black, I think the screen's brightness is the culprit, but i cant figure out what to press to increase the screen's brightness because the screen is completey black.

It goes black because it went into shutdown due to fault in the inverter circuits, check the 4 transistors in the inverter circuits for shorts, http://s807.photobucket.com/albums/yy352/budm/Dell%20E173FPb/

Screen not working

Does it seem like the laptop booted up all the way except the screen is black? Do you hear fans running, hard drive spinning? If so try the steps below.

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barelysee the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can beany kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vgacable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves yourvideo card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you rebootwithout you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN(Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correctkey for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key willnormally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash lightand nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card isbad.

I was trying to hook up my laptop (Dell Inspiron 2200)(windows xp) to my television. I managed to get the laptop to go to the tv screen, but when computer rebooted, I got a black screen and cannot get rid...

use the F8 button before windows starts. as the laptop show the manufacturer's screen. keep tapping it gently and fast until you get froted with the bootup options screen. Select whichever option reads the word "VGA" in it. Then it will boot into windows. Enter the multiple screen setup (could be hard given that screen could show all icons and windows big) and select proper settings. Restart the PC and ensure the options remain active.

Screen goes black on my hp pavilion dv4000 notebook

Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop, power up the monitor first then boot up the laptop. The video data will switch to the monitor automatically, check if the monitor dislays a normal image and see if the image stays on the monitor.
Also press and hold the Fn key and press the F4 key, these keys toggle the video output between the LCD screen and the video port.
Test to see if this functions correctly.
Get back to me with the results of the tests.

Monitor displays breifly then goes to blank screen

If tried the monitor on two other computers with the same result -- definitly your monitor is faulty. Take it to the repair shop. To make double sure, run your computer with another monitor. If everything is fine now; you can blame the monitor.

Monitor goes black but shows icons...

I'll assume this is an LCD panel screen.

If what you are saying is the screen shows up and then goes dim or starts dim, and you can see a dark image of the system starting up and then displaying Windows...

Your problem is a bad CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) at the top of the LCD panel.

If the screen is totally blank, then it may be the power inverter.

You can find many websites that sell these parts, but make sure you have the right model.

If you feel comfortable with working on computers, you can replace this part yourself. Otherwise, you may want to pay a technician to do it. Make sure to get a fixed price quote before authorizing the work

Here is a website on LCD repair for laptops, but it the same principal for display monitors.

Data Shows up only on External Monitor, not on Laptop Screen

If your system won't display anything w/o the external monitor. there's something wrong with the LCD's backlight. you may have to contact your laptop's manufacturer and check if this laptop is still under warranty. you may have to get the lcd replaced.

thanks.
