CD Rom wants to remain in Open position and doesn't read cds

The CD Rom wants to remain in the open position. If I put a disc in it and please close, it looks like it might work then re-opens again. Any suggestions as to what it might be?

There might be something jamed or lodged in the CD-ROM compartment which would be preventing it to close all the way so it wants to stay open.Hope this helps =)

My cd rom drive plays cds rips cds reads and does cd rom programs but will not let me burn cds any more..... i was able to burn cds just fine before???? please any help?

Have you tried reseating the CD rom;verify all the connectors are securely fastened. What type of Dell is this; a tower, desktop, or laptop? If you know how to open the case then proceed with reseating as follows:

First power down the system
After opening the case
locate the CDROM
If this is a new system it is probably connected using a SATA connector (black cable with a blue connector and power connector.)
At the back of the remove each connector then reconnect the cable
The SATA or Parrellel cable has a connector at both ends so trace the cable and re-seat the connector on the motherboard as well.
close the case
boot the system back up
test the cdrom

Re. TEAC CD-224E, model version -B66. The drive will only open when inserting a pin in the release hole. When a disc is inserted and the drive closed the computer can not read it, the disc keeps...

This is an indication of mechanical failure of some part of the ejection mechanism. Since they are more expensive to fix than the drive is worth, replacement is your best option.

In addition, since the CD remains spun up and the activity light doesn't go out, there's probably something else wrong with the drive in addition to the failed ejection component.

It doesnt open and cant read the cds inside.

Remove the cover lid and look inside for anything jamming disk tray, problem may be very simple once you look at this. change out some of the cds.

Cd tray stays open

There could be damage to the tray contact switches
(these tell to the control unit the position of the tray - open/closed), so that the control unit can start/stop and reverse the direction of the tray ejector motor.

These contacts are located somewhere underneath the tray (usually near the front unit cover), and since you mentioned that the tray was bumped while it was open, it is possible they were damaged. Also, the behaviour of the tray suggests that the control unit can no longer tell whether the tray is open or closed so it operates the tray motor in a wrong manner, which, again, points to these same contacts as the possible cause.

Repairing the contacts may be a somewhat delicate procedure, first you need to locate them (it may require partial disassemby of the tray mechanism), if they are bent a pair of tweezers might do the job, if there's hard damage, it's probably better to replace them (scrapped CD ROM units or a dead CD unit might be a good source, they just need to be of the same dimensions).

There may also be other causes for this malfunction, i just mentioned the first thing that i would check.

Hope this helps somehow.
