Hello,

Not knowing the age and model of your emachine I will give you a few choices.

If it's an older series like the picture above you should be able to go into the start menu, all programs and then either PC Help and Tools or Emachine-Recovery manager. Then select Recovery Disk Creator.

If it's a newer model, Emachines and Gateway were bought out by Acer over a year ago and now use the Acer style recovery. Select Star, All Programs, then Emachine Recovery Manager. Load the Disk Creator selecting Factory Default disks first then selecting Application and Driver Disk.

One note, if it's an older model you will only be able to create the application and driver disk. It would have came factory with a base windows install disk. If you have lost this disk, you can reinstall using any standard OEM disk for the correct version of windows and using the windows license attached to the computer, but you will need the application and drivers disk to install your devices and programs.

If it's and older model and you can't find the disk, you can order a replacement set by contacting Emachines support, but there will be a cost invloved.

What type of disks are you using? You cannot use DVD RW. You need to use DVD - R . I have had this very issue. Hope this helps.

PS, once it tries to write to a dvd and fails, try a new one.

It looks like you'll have to either return it or perform a default factory recovery. These instructions are from their site but proceed knowing that this will erase any data that is stored on the primary partition (meaning if you have anything on it, it's gone...). Esentially it resets it to a point as if you just picked it up in the store (which you did.. :( )

So, you will need to find out the System recovery disk. also there is a built in option for recover the system in original factory default if the OS is provided by the Device vendor ( such as: hp, sony, toshiba etc.) they all provides the system with pc as System Recovery disc creator.... Issue with opticaldrive and creating factory default disc

most of the time to create recovery disks you have to use about 7 cds, 2 DVDs, 1 blueray or double layer. some systems also use DVD+R, when you start the disk creation it would tell you what it requires, your best option (if compatible) would be using 2 DVDs-R. On the other hand if you inserted the cd and it turned a few revs. most likely it is ruined already so you have to use a new disk.
if it is a brand new pc you should be able to use DVD. here is a tutorial for HP and it is pretty similar for most computers

I have an Acer Aspire 5720, ive had it for a year now and it is starting to slow down. I have lost the booklet to it and i need to do a master reset on it. Ive already backed everything up im just finding...

This was taken straight out of the manual for your model, which can be found here.

    Acer eRecovery Management
Acer eRecovery Management is a tool to quickly backup and restore the system.
You can create and save a backup of the current system configuration to hard
disk, CD or DVD. You can also backup/restore the factory default image, and
    reinstall applications and drivers.

Acer eRecovery Management consists of the following functions:

    1 Create backup
    2 Burn backup disc
    3 Restore and recovery

This chapter will guide you through each process.
Note: This feature is only available on certain models. For systems
that do not have a built-in optical disc burner, plug in an external
optical disc burner before entering Acer eRecovery Management
    for optical disc-related tasks.

When using Acer eRecovery Management, you may be prompted to enter the
Empowering Technology password to proceed. The Empowering Technology
password is set using the Empowering Technology toolbar or when first running
Acer eLock Management or Acer eRecovery Management.

    Create backup

You can easily create full and fast (incremental) backup images of your system
configuration to hard disk from the main Acer eRecovery Management screen.
Note: Fast (incremental) Backup is only available after a Full
    Backup is made.

1 Press <Alt> + <F10> or select Acer eRecovery Management from the
Empowering Technology toolbar to start Acer eRecovery Management.
2 In the Acer eRecovery Management window, select the type of backup you
want to create using Full or Fast.
3 Follow the instructions on screen to complete the process.

    Burn backup disc
Using the Burn Disc page of Acer eRecovery Management, you can burn the
factory default image, a user backup image, the current system configuration,
or an application backup image to CD or DVD.
1 Press <Alt> + <F10> or select Acer eRecovery Management from the
Empowering Technology toolbar to start Acer eRecovery Management.
2 Switch to the Burn Disc page by selecting the Burn Disc button.
3 Select the type of backup (factory default, user, current system,
application) you would like to burn to disc. Choosing to burn a user backup
will burn your most recently created backup image to disc.
4 Follow the instructions on screen to complete the process.
Note: Create a factory default image when you want to burn a
bootable disc that contains your computer's entire operating
system as it was delivered to you from the factory. If you wish to
have a disc that will allow you to browse the contents and install
selected drivers and applications, create an application backup
image instead — this disc will not be bootable.

    Restore and recovery

The restore and recovery features allow you to restore or recover the system
from a factory default image, from a user created image, or from previously
created CD and DVD backups. You can also reinstall applications and drivers for
    your Acer system.
1 Press <Alt> + <F10> or select Acer eRecovery Management from the
Empowering Technology toolbar to start Acer eRecovery Management.
2 Switch to the restore and recovery page by selecting the Restore button.
3 Select the backup point you would like to restore from. You can also
choose to recover the system from a factory default image, recover from a
previously created CD/DVD or reinstall applications and drivers.
4 Follow the instructions on screen to complete the process.

I didn't get a disk to restore to factory in the box. Do I need to buy that seperate, from the factory?

Here's the support page from Gateway for your model.
    http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2009/Ajax2/MD26/MD26nv.shtml

And here's the user guide link (which you can find at the page mentioned above)
    http://support.gateway.com/s/Manuals/Desktops/8513015.pdf

and below are the steps from the user guide which to me seems like the solution for your question.

To create discs, click (Start), All Programs, Gateway, then click Gateway Recovery
Management. To create recovery discs for your factory-loaded hard drive contents (Windows
Vista, pre-installed software and drivers), click Create factory default disc or, to create recovery
discs for only the factory-loaded drivers and software, click Create driver and application
backup disc. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish.
