The encoder strip was damaged when a paper jam occurred. I have located a replacement strip on-line, but cannot find any directions on how to install it.
Thanks
My encoder strip got pulled out by my 2 year old. Not sure where he got it from or how I put it back...or if its really "damaged". I guess I'll look inside and see where it might go?

An encoder strip is seriously easy to replace! the strip rides thru a sensor on the ink cartridge carriage. one end hooks on to a small "hook"" on the left side of the plotter. the other end connects to a small "hook" on the encoder strip spring which connects to the right side of the plotter. Most manufacturers consider anything inside the case to be "not user replaceable". but really, its harder to keep the pictbridge bezel (cover) from falling out than it is to replace the encoder strip.
in response to jktyler.. my 2 year old did the same. if the small slots on the ends of the encoder strip are broken, then the strip is definitely damaged.
Honestly the most likely reason that you are not able to find this part very easily and no directions on how to install it is due to the fact that it really isn't a user replaceable part. It may or may not work once you install it because the printer was not really designed to have certain parts replaced.
I would call hp and see if they have any upgrade units available - usually refurbished but they come with a 1 yr warranty and are significantly cheaper than buying a new unit from the store. They will also take your unit and pay to have it returned to go to an environmental recycling facility.

Fault: Double line & paper is not cutting. >Check encoder strip, any damage or dirty? >Clean encoder strip, replace it.. Reason why its not cutting?: Carriage moves to left side to lock & bring the cutter to cut the paper, but if its not reaching proper calculated destination due to dirty or damaged encoder, it wont lock the cutter to bring it out result paper wont cut even cutter in on condition..
Hi,
I had this same problem and it is an easy fix. It is similar on all brother printers but mine was a 5860CN.
Lift the lid on your printer and at the back you can see the opening where the print head is.
With the power off, use your finger to move the print head into the middle.
Now feel under the lip of the cover at the front of the gap and you will
find a plastic strip that runs from one side to the other. This is the
encoding strip and it what the print head uses to read where it is. This
encoding strip is easily pushed out of position when a paper jam occurs
and all you need to do is to get it back into position. Using both
hands use a finger on either side of the print head and lift the encoding
strip upwards slightly and move slightly towards the back of the printer. This will
locate it back into the correct position in the print head when you
release. You can feel this with your fingers. Power back on and the problems will be gone!
Remember and be gentle so as not to damage the encoder strip!
You may encounter a paper jam while working with your Brother printer.
You need to be cautious while feeding the paper to your printer. Paper
jams are often obvious, but you might come across a situation when you
do not get any indication that the paper has jammed up the printer. In
such cases, you need to open your printer and visually inspect it to
search for the jammed paper. If the rollers of your printer are leaving
marks on the printouts, then there is a need to clean them. Using
chemical cleaners such as benzine, thinner, or alcohol to clean the
rollers might prove hazardous to your printer.
The paper jam you had probably lifted the long, thin, plastic encoder
strip out of its slot. It is making the printer think paper is still
jammed. Try gently pushing the strip back into the slot. You might
have to use a screwdriver or other thin instrument to get to the strip.
Be sure printer is off when you do this.
Please try the bellow mentioned troubleshooting steps to help elliminate the paper jam and noise issue for your printer:
Things that cause a carriage jam error:
Dirty encoder strip.
Damaged encoder strip.
Encoder strip spring mount out of position so strip is slack.
Encoder strip not threaded through the emitter/detector that reads the lines on the strip. (just fixed a 5550 with this problem)
Emitter/detector that reads the lines on the strip is bad, this is part of the carriage PCA, (board).
Carriage stuck on side because service station is not releasing it.
Carriage stuck due to being tilted at wrong angle, if it's stuck a few inches from the right it needs to move farther to the right to be released, stuck a few inches from the left end move it farther to the left. (instructions probably on HP web site, they are there for the DeskJet 5550)
Carriage binding on rail due to ink build-up or lack of lubrication, (be careful what you use to lube).
Bad carriage motor.
Bad carriage drive belt.
Some machines have a timing disc on the service station motor and may indicate a carriage jam if the service station motor does not turn.
The cause could also be a loose cable connection on a small circuitboard inside the printer (The one that controlled the paper jam sensors) I fixed it by saudering the leads to the board until I had a good connection again.

Reseat
the Dell Printer Power Adapter. If your
printer has a momentary loss of communication with your computer, it may be
necessary to reset the printer to re-establish communication. You can reset a
printer by unplugging the printer power cord from the electrical outlet and
from the back of the printer for 10 seconds then reattaching the cord at both
ends. Check
with manufacturer if printer is still covered under warranty... If yes
then get it replaced.....or else get a new printer

The CR encoder strip is not in position. Its the encoder strip which gives the printhead the position. It runs upon the printhead (a small foil strip). BTW this happens quite often because the jammed paper lifts the strip out of position.
You ve to open the printer and simply put the encoder strip right into its rail between the senor upon the printhead again.
My encoder strip got pulled out by my 2 year old. Not sure where he got it from or how I put it back...or if its really "damaged". I guess I'll look inside and see where it might go?
