Do you have an external monitor you can connect it to? If it displays on an external monitor, your display is bad.

First check to see if your PC has a built in factory restore, or system recovery, usually available using CTRL & F12, F10, etc. Check your manual, if you don't then, OK try this, Startup PC, press F8 at instant of turn on... choose Safe Mode. when you are asked if you want safe desktop or system restore choose restore, when you get to the restore menu, choose a date BEFORE you had problems there may only be one or two to choose from. just follow the instructions and you should be back to working with all that behind you. If that doesn't work, boot up on your Windows DVD and do a "Repair Install", If thats doesn't work do a format and a reinstall.

Acer travelmate 290 error

Use another Bootable Disk Operating System to see it as may be the same problem you have. I think it's your Installer Disk have a problem.
From this problem it's windows system failure to show display appearance normally.
At least you try just one installing another Bootable Disk.
Good luck!
