The airport is just a receiver that picks up wireless signals.

If you want your computer to pick up wireless, you need a wireless
router, and a wireless card that goes into the computer so it can see the router and get the signals.

There are tons of wireless products, and it depends on the slots you have on which kind of wireless card you get.

Can the wireless option on the airport extreme be turned off from the outside? I did not set a password.

Hi Friend
If you are using a Mac laptop then yes there is a way. on your MAC laptop there is a wireless switch to turn off and on the airport. You can use that to turn off the airport from outside.

I have installed an Airport Extreme wireless system for my home. It works fine on an old pc hard wired and wireless on my macbook pro and my windows xp64 system. It can't find an IP address from my Dell...

You need to make sure the wireless card of the Dell is set to the same settings of the Airport. Also, try to ping the Dell under the ipconfig command. If you still have no connection, then you have a problem with the wireless card.

Airport Extreme Bases Station not detectable with utility

This depends... Reaching them wirelessly may be unreliable for a number of reasons, so, I'll proceed on the assumption that you are attempting to test in the simplest lowest-variable situation:
First, make sure that you have the latest Airport Utility for your Mac.
Connect your Mac to the Airport via a single Category 5 (or 5e or 6) cable. Factory-reset the Airpot and then wake up the Mac. If the utility still can't discover your airport, it's probably time for a trip to your local Genius bar as you most likely have a hardware problem.
Lather, rinse, repeat for each of the two airports.

I tried to set up HP Photosmart C4580 printer/scanner/copier with my Airport Extreme. However it is not connecting to the Airport Extreme. Diagnostic check recommends temporariiy disabling the Mac Address...

MAC address filtering is used to prevent unauthorised people getting access to your wireless network. you need to get into the Airport Extreme configuration using Internet Explorer or any other browser, then select wireless setup then MAC address filtering. You need to turn off MAC address filtering.
Check your manual on how to configure your Airport Extreme.

Airport settings in Mac leopard

Make sure your ADSL router has wireless capability or wireless function. Verify that from your Internet Provider. If your ADSL router doesn't have wireless function, you need to buy a separate wireless router then cascade it to your ADSL router, from there your airport must be working fine.
