What do you want to use it for? Playing DVDs on the computer? Then you will need an application that has MPEG2 decoders installed along with it, like WinDVD or PowerDVD.

You can also go to www.videolan.org/vlc and download the VLC Media Player, which has all the codecs built in - it can be used to play DVDs as well as all the multimedia files like MP3, AVI etc.

If however you want to burn your own CDs or DVDs, you will need applications for those purposes as well - there are many free CD/DVD burning applications out there, DVD authoring apps and so on. Also computer magazines often include such applications on discs bundled with them.

Good luck.

I assume you would like to play a DVD on Windows XP and it does not work.

Windows XP does not contain DVD player software out of the box. You need to install third party software for this. Commercially available programs include "WinDVD" (Corel) or "PowerDVD" (InterVideo).
A free alternative is VLC, available here: http://www.videolan.org/

You do not need a manual or special driver for your DVD drive; DVD drives share a common interface and work with Windows using a generic driver.

My windows media player is not working on video files?

Many video files require a custom codec (a decoder/encoder). There are codec packs you an download and install that will play most if not all video files. Google "windows 7 codec pack". Don't forget to run your anti virus check on it before installing.
tip

Can not play all the file

Cant open demuxer

If the "Cannot open demuxer" error appears it means the Avi encoders on your system are either missing or corrupt. Please use the following links below to download and install Divx and Xvid encoders. A good way of telling if your Avi encoders are installed properly is if the AVi file being used can play in Windows Media Player correctly.

You would simply need to download the appropriate codec you are attempting to convert to, and also the Windows Media Encoder.

Seems that you are missing codecs on the PC. Try using VLC Player and install the K-Lite mega codec pack from:
