Take everything out and put in another freezer or ice chest with out ice. This is a good time to clean out the old stuff. If the hole in the bottom can be used to catch the water you can put a pan or tray to catch it. You can place pans in the bottom to catch the water just keep checking them to prevent overflow. You can put a small fan blowing into the freezer to speed it up or even use a hairdryer. DON'T USE ANYTHING TO CHIP AT THE ICE. WAIT ON IT TO MELT. It will damage the coils etc.

I unplug mine and let it take several days. You break a line or punch a hole in a line and the freezer will be ruined. Just let it thaw out on its own to prevent damage.

Ice build up in the bottom of my upright freezer

If it's a frost free model, it could be caused by a plugged defrost drain. Every time it goes through a defrost cycle the water is supposed to drain into the compressor compartment. You can defrost it by unplugging it for a day or two and then remove the panel covering the evaporator coil. You should be able to see the drain tray under the coil and find out whats blocking it.

I have a 7 year old Kenmore Upright Refrigerator/Freezer on top. I am losing the temp in the fridge part only. The back up the freezer gets a thick layer of ice buildup and when i remove the back panel the...

After you taken the back panel off and see a lot of ice forming on the coil before you use your hairdryer you should locate the timer and turn the center of the timer manually into defrost cycle. If you can see or hear the ice melting then your problem is the timer defective. Change the timer and that is all. But if it doesn't do anything then you will need a little bit more on electrical knowledge to deal with the rest on defrost temperature control and the element itself. Hope this help, God Bless.

Need correct setting for 30 yr old upright Kenmore freezer

Your best bet is to start in the middle. Guesstimate and let it run. The test is to see if water freezes solid in 6-8 hours. If not, you can turn about 1/4 turn or less. Then you can try hamburger meat which a lower freezing temp and see if it gets solid. Your perishable items should be put somewhere else until you are ready. At least the water frozen will keep the meat safe from bacteria growth or spoilage. Let me know how you do.
