The XT does not have a live view capability. It works as SLRs have worked for half a century: you frame the picture through the viewfinder and click the shutter.

Or are you saying that you can't see the menu on the display?

There is a minimal focusing distance for all lenses. If you move closer to the subject than that distance then the camera won't focus on it. Check you lens manual for minimal focusing distance. It is 11 inches for Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM, for example.

How do I have the viewfinder image show in the LCD display

The EOS 350D doesn't have that function (Live View). You need to shoot with the viewfinder. Only later models of D-SLRs have Live View functions (EOS 500D, 50D, 40D, etc). You can however, playback your captured shots by pressing the "Play" button

Controls on the top of the EOS 350D are all found on the right side within reach of your 79a8647.jpg
Index finger or thumb.

Select sports icon on it.

Shutter speed is kept as high as possible to ensure capture of fast moving objects and action clips.
