I found this out when trying to do the same with Epson (after talking to their tech support). The printers with printheads that are reusable (Epson, Canon, Kodak, and whoever else) force you to replace the empty cartridge so that air doesn't get drawn into the printhead, killing it off. The tank still has a little ink in there to keep it from drying out. It's cheaper to replace the cartridge than getting a new printhead.

The printer won't print. It says replace the color ink cartridge. All I want to do is print black and white.

You can only use the black ink cartridge without the color ink. But no need to replace them in your printer.
When you print just choose black and white for the printed text must be black not colored. But if you still received such notification...just try to replace the color ink cartridge to continue printing
Note: As per my experience. printer with exclusive black ink alone will damage the printer easily due to unbalance printing of ink

I ran out of both black and color ink. I replaced the black ink b/c I do not print in color. But I cannot complete the alignment steps without the color ink.

Lexmark printers usually require both cartridges to have ink left in them to continue printing. But try to press the Cancel button for the Alignment process (this is not recommended). Then try to print a document again to verify that you are able to continue printing without an empty color ink.
If that doesn't help, I would suggest you replace your color cartridge with a new genuine Lexmark cartridge.

I have a new black ink cartridge but my printer wont print because the color ink is empty is there a way to get it to print without refilling the colored ink since i only need black???

When printing in BLACK, a small amount of the COLOUR ink also is used.
This "trick" prevents the COLOUR ink-jets from clogging, due to not being used.

So, you need to have a "good" COLOUR ink-cartridge.

How do i mix the colours on my stylus sx115 as i have run out of black but have the other 3 colours remaining?

Conserving Black Ink When the Cartridge Is Low (For Windows Only) The window below appears when black ink runs low and there is more color ink than black ink. It appears only when plain papers is selected as the paper type, and Text is selected as the Quality Option.

c497x0230h.gif
The window gives you the option to either continue using black ink normally or conserve black ink by using a mixture of color inks to create black. Click the Yes button to use a mixture of color inks to create black. You will see the same window the next time you print a similar job. Click the No button to continue using the remaining black ink for the job you are printing. You will see the same window the next time you print a similar job, and again have the option to conserve black ink. Click Disable this feature to continue using the remaining black ink.

Epson sx200 One of the colour inks is empty and no print in black

Hi, this is not a solution because I don't think there is one apart from buying new inks. Epson and all other inkjet printers do this to prevent the coloured print head nozzles from getting blocked. If they are not used for a long time the ink dries up and blocks the nozzles. Epson recommends printing at least once a month with all colours to prevent this. Printing in black only option will only work if the colored inks are OK. Whenever the printer is turned on it performs a head clean, this is why the coloured inks get used over time even though they are not used for printing.

Ink

Epson ink jet printers require all of the ink cartridges to have ink in them in order to print any color, black and white, or grayscale images. Epson printers contain a permanent print head that needs to be charged with all colors to work. Even when users are printing black text only, a small amount of color ink is used to keep the print head charged for color printing and prevent air bubbles from entering the color print nozzles which can damage the print head. Therefore, once one of the cartridges are expended, the printer signals you to replace the cartridge in order for printing to continue.

Not printing

The remaining levels of the following ink cannot be correctly detected.
Color
The following ink is running low.
Black [830]
Prepare a new ink cartridge.
The resulting print quality may not be satisfactory, if printing is continued under this condition.
If either black or color ink cartridge has run out, you can set the printer to continue printing with the other cartridge from the Ink Cartridge Settings on the Maintenance tab of the printer driver.
