When I try to turn the tv on, I get a dotted green line in the center of the screen. After about a minute, or less, the tv turns itself off and the "timer on" light flashes. I cannot adjust the timer unless the tv is on. Any suggestions?

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY TRIED REPLACING THE LAMP YOU NEED TO CALL A SONY SERVICE CENTER THERE IS A CONFIDENTAIL SERVICE BULLITIN FOR THIS PROBLEM E31795896.
or a new lamp. you could first replace the lamp. the screen might work fine for a couple of seconds, but then it fades away or deteriorates. This means the lamp is going bad.
Take off the speaker grill and the particle board just behind it. You'll find a block with six knobs. The 3 bottom knobs can be adjusted ever so slightly to fix your problem. Do it very slowly. You wan to adjust the center knob for green. Turn it until the lines go away. But again, do it very slowly. You're adjusting the voltage to the green tube. Do it too fast and you can damage it.
My tv too had a blue screen problem. Then it started to shut down after staying on for less than a minute. I thought that I would with a huge repair bill but I followed the directions at this link: http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/06/sony-projection-tv-red-line-repair.html and now my tv works perfectly.
You have whats known in the biz as a cold solder connection on the vertical output IC or on the associated components. Not a job for the handi-man unless you know the issues with safty, and precautions to take with Hi voltage inside of tv sets. Shouldnrt cost much for the local shop to find your problem . Now on rare occations the poor connections are inside the IC and the IC has to be replaced. Good Luck
