The ram you will need if you want to upgrade to 1GB is DDR400 (better known as PC 3200U (400MHZ BUS speed)), if you already have it, be aware that static is a very dangerous thng to microchips as it causes them to fail, so plug the PC in and leave the switches turned OFF, this will ground the case, open the panel with care and make sure you touch the chassis regularly and DO NOT work on a carpet for obvious reasons, there will be two white clips on the sides of the module(s) already in the system, push the tabs back to release the module, remember to handle the memory from the top and don't touch the contacts, take the new module, line it up with the notch in the middle of the socket and the RAM, and lightly push it in until the white tabs lock into place, then close everything up, power it up and run MEMTEST86 and Prime95 to make sure the system is stable with the new RAM and that it will not cut out or blue screen.
There u go! and YES, 2GB is tha maximum RAM you can have on that one.
But NO, you can NOT use PC3200 sticks, this is what you can use: PC2100 (266-MHz) or PC2700 (333-MHz) DDR SDRAM (non-ECC)
I have one for sale at www.JonRosenSystems.com. This is an extremely large and heavy unit. It has two P3-733 CPU's, 512mb RAM and three 18gb Quantum Atlas SCSI drives. I have more drives and RAM available.
Hey kmart08, If you're not quite sure what kind of memory you would need to replace or upgrade your existing configuration, you may wish to first look up your specific model using your Dell service tag through the following link: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/details?~ck=ln&~tab=2&c=us&l=en&lnki=0&s=gen Once you have entered your service tag, you should be provided with a full, detailed list of the hardware within your computer - including the type and size of the memory stick(s) originally installed. This information may also be available in the owner's manual documentation provided by Dell with your system. According to information available, Dimension 2400 series computers should be able to use PC2100 (266-MHz) or PC2700 (333-MHz) DDR SDRAM, but you may wish to speak with a Dell tech support representative directly for confirmation. Hope this helps you out. Sincerely, Aaron Go Ahead. Use Us.
The front side bus speed of the processor is the limiting factor of your RAM speed.
The Processor has a 400 Mhz FSB, hnece your RAM runs at 266.
For RAM to run at 333 (PC 2700), you'll need a 533 FSB Processor.
