How do you know it's not the VCR that's not responding? If it this remote, you would be better getting a Universal one, as replacements are often very expensive.
In the setup menu there will be a screen that lets you change from <AIR> to <CABLE>. When that is done, do an automatic channel setting or programming. That should do it. If you have trouble leave a comment and I'll follow up.
Usaly there is a button on the remote for input but if you do not have that you might try changing chanels below chanel 1. Some Goldstars hide the front input down there
you might try http://www.replacementremotes.com/store/prodthumbs.cfm?categoryid=121. or, you could possibly obtain a universal unit. As you probably know, the low cost universal ones may not have the advanced programming functions, such as timed record. Perhaps a higher dollar one would.
