When I turn on my kdl-46xbr5 sony tv in the morning, I get horizonal lines that are jittering and dark screen on the right side of the screen. It has color in the dark area, and the other areas of the screen are normal. As the tv warms up, sometimes 10 minutes, the screen slowly returns to normal. Please advise.

Had same issue with kdl 46xbr5 (service manual lists this model and your model in the same manual).
I loosened and retightened all of the ground screws until I found the one that caused the problem. I also reseated all of the cable connectors (with the unit off) before I did that as well. Found a few connectors were loose and at least 3-5 ground screws were not tight. works just perfectly now.
You have a bad Panel, but here is the good news. Sony will cover this until Oct 31, 2012. What you will need to do is check your TV into service. You might have to pay a deposit, but you will get it back. The servicer will then contact Sony and then Sont will contact you to make arrangements on getting you a new TV, because they are no longer replacing this panel. Congrats, you are getting a new TV.
The reddish blotchy screen also had a series of horizontal lines/sections of screen on occasion. I was able to determine that the ground wire screws were loose (loosened and retightend all of them) and a few of the connections between boards (the wires/plugs) were loose. Seems to have resolved the issue without having to replace any boards/caps etc. I would try this free 20 minute fix before searching out a new board.
I also have a 2 yr old Sony KDL32xbr4 that now has multi-colored vertical lines on the screen. I contacted Sony and they say they have "no known issue" of this sort for this model. I find this rather puzzling since I have found numerous postings on the web. They told me to try the factory reset. Whatever. Might as well have said "don't buy a Sony". 2 years! $1300 for a tv and it lasts 2 years! Makes me sick to my stomach.
