Question about Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver

GPS unit won't charge when placed on cradle and plugged in wall

This is the first time I've had the problem. Normially when I place the forerunner on the charging cradle "Battery Charging" will read on the screen. But that isn't the case now. It either wont do anything or it shuts on and off and says low battery but isn't charging.

    How do I change the battery to the main unit itself? I can't find any instructions in the owners manual and can't figure it out by looking at the forerunner.

You may have to replace your battery, these go faulty often, even though they seem OK.

Yesterday i download the forerunner 205 software from the garmin website. after i connect my unit using usb to the computer, my garmin won,t power on immediately. i tried to reset it (soft and hard reset)...
Did you install the software correctly? Because such errors appear usually when the update/upgrade is not finisher or was not done in a proper manner.
If possible try to verify the device on another computer (a friend's) to see if the same problem appear.
If the problem persists I'd say you've burned out your battery (hope not the hole Forerunner...!).

I reinstalled the driver of my garmin forerunner 205 but it is still not recognized by my computer. it has been working for over a year but now I do not get any connection and the device is not recognized...

When you connect the unit to the cradle is there any reaction from the unit? I would try using a different USB port and cord first if this dosent fix your problem the next step would be to obtain a new cradle for your unit. Forerunner 305 will not charge. Connection seems like it's not making between cradle and unit. If i wiggle it, sometimes it will briefly connect
Try cleaning the contacts on the back of the Garmin with an eraser then wipe the contacts clean on the Garmin and on the docking cradle with a rag dipped in methylated spirit or isopropyl alcohol.

Charged in the cradle, came on a bit, but didn't last long. Now completely dead. I read to hit mode and reset at same time. How do I find reset when the unit is off?
Before you reset have you checked the fuse in the car lighter adapter.... unscrew the silver tip of plug CAREFULLY its spring loaded check fuse...

Won't turn on
The device may just be locked up and needs to be reset so that it can start up normally. To do a reset on the device, make sure the unit is plugged in to the charging cable/cradle and connected to power. Next press and hold the Mode + Reset buttons at the same time for approximately 10 seconds. After releasing the Mode + Reset buttons, attempt to power the device on normally.

My forerunner will no longer turn on or even charge, can they be repaired or am I best to buy a new unit?

But first, try cleaning the electrical contacts on the forerunner and the cradle by rubbing them with a pencil eraser. The slight abrasive should remove any oxidation on the metal. A bad contact between the unit and the cradle could be your problem.

Same thing happened to mine. Put the unit in the cradle (just like you are going to recharge it) and press the reset and mode button at the same time for 3 seconds. This will "wake" the unit up.

My husband is the best!  Here's what he did and now it works:
Hold the on/off button and mode button, then hit the lap/reset button.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Answer: If a Forerunner or Edge 205/305 is unable to power on, a soft reset can be performed to un-freeze it. This will not erase any user data and is most effective if the device is connected to the computer while performing the reset.
To reset the Forerunner or Edge 205/305:
  1. Connect the device to the computer using the USB cable
  2. Press and hold the mode and reset (lap) buttons together for 10 seconds
  3. Release and wait for 3 seconds
  4. There should be some indication of battery charging (either Finished or In Process)
  5. Power the device on while keeping it connected to the computer
In addition, please make sure that the device has the latest software version
