Try pulling out the CDROM drive from the laptop may sure the connectors are not bent or broken. On that model Iam not sure if its held in with 2 micro screws but look closely for any or u will damage your case.
First thing I would do is update the drivers for the cdrom. Also try using different program to rule out cd rom failure. You can use VLC media player, Window Media Player 11 and so on. Also, if you open the cd rom you will see the glass laser eye. You can clean this eye with rubbing alcohol and a cotton swab
First step would be to try cleaning with a good quality dvd cleaner. Then see if drive detects. More than likely this problem is caused by a dirty laser lens or improper lens alignment. Cleaning should always be the first step in a problem you describe as 99% of the time it is the cure. Good luck.
to see if this solution fits your problem
right click on my computer and select manage.
then on the left side select device manager
now look on the right side and see if you can find the cd or dvd drives do they have a ! or ? mark on them? right click and properties look at the status is there a error code? if yes look at the page above and see if the error code fits the solution.
I think there is some problem with your cdrom drive. Try to clean the cdrom lense with a soft cloth. You will see the lense when you eject the cd tray.
First of all, find out if there's XP drivers available for your laptop. Many new ones don't have. Installing XP without working drivers becomes pointless, as your laptop won't run properly without them.
