I'm gonna bet the output is AC because there is no rectifier circuitry between the transformer and the timer assembly. The lighting this is supposed to power does not require DC so why put in the circuitry if it is not needed. So more than likely it is 12V ac

H ow to replace timer with phot0 cell

Malibu ML300 has 120 volt input and 12 volt AC output
They make a photo eye for the timer... wiring is changed a bit... will work on ML300 if timer has A-B-C wiring terminals
http://waterheatertimer.org/Malibu-power-pack-stopped-working.html#wire

You can use a 120 -> 12 volt ac transformer that is rated for 300 watts... and connect in-line photoeye on the 120 volt side.

How do I fix broken JBL flip will not turn on?

You smoked off the regulator , a transformer is for AC voltage change like say a step up or step down and the trxfmer just shot AC voltage to where DC should have been. The bridge rectifier is what changes the AC to DC not a transformer . If you have soldering skills you can replace it on the board , it could be you just cooked off a diode (1 of 4 to make bridge) . Hope this helps

Will my new LED malibu lights work with with my ML200RT transformer? They use considerably less wattage than my old bulb type lamps.

Malibu puts out 12 Volt AC without specifying type of bulb
If new bulbs work on 12 Volt AC, then they should work
http://waterheatertimer.org/Malibu-power-pack-stopped-working.html#install

Wattage on bulbs should match power pack wattage, or damage can occur to power pack.
Buy new power pack, call Intermatic, or Try it out and see if it works

If you have a meter you can test for 12 volts AC on the output of the transformer. They go to terminals

Malibu Light Transformer ML121RT troubleshooting

1) Disconnect the plug.
2) Remove the 3 hex screws holding the cover.
3) Make a note of all connections (taking a picture is even better).
4) Connect the black power wire to the red transformer wire.
5) Connect the white power wire to the white transformer wire.
6) Set your voltmeter to 20 or 50 volts AC (not DC and not less than 15 volts).
7) Plug the transformer in the wall.
8) Test the voltage coming from the A & B connectors at the back (polarity is irrelevant).
If you see 12 volts or thereabout, the problem is with the little switch (the one with the black and red wires that is activated by the trippers on the clock dial). I have the exact same problem but I have been unable to locate the part so I am going to try to clean the contact points and see if that works.

Malibu landscape lighting transformer problem

Testing ohms across A and B will read open circuit through transformer coil.
Testing DC voltage across terminals A and B should read 12 volts DC, and nothing less.
Transformer should make humming sound when working.
Test that receptacle has power and breaker is not tripped.

There are no repair parts for power packs, but they come with 5 year limited warranty.
