It sounds like the player has bit the dust. you can try a lens cleaner disc, but it is doubtful that it'll work. Samsung set-top players don't have the best reputation, but this one actually scored pretty well on Amazon customer reviews (this kind of issue in particular (cannot read media anymore - or even initially out of the box) is one that Samsungs are known for). I'd recommend just making the jump to a Blu-Ray player since they have fallen in price and a good unit can be picked up fairly inexpensively (get a profile 2.0 unit)

That usually happens when the laser deteriorates. You can get it replaced but it's not cheap

The drive plays DVDs and can read doc files, but

This problem is normal and exists with many CD/DVD drives.
On some of the drives, if you put in blank discs and try to open the disc in My Computer or Windows Explorer, Windows displays no contents or a blank disc. Whereas on other drives, you get the error message that you mentioned about incorrect function.

What software are you using to burn CDs or DVDs? Are you able to burn CDs but not DVDs or you can't burn both the discs? Did you try a CDs with a different make/manufacturer? Some drives refuse on some disc makes. Try another disc and another writing speed, or try the lowest writing speed available with your software.

Hope that helps,
Regards,
Raspal

Sony CX995v "Cannot Play" message on DVDs but plays CDs O.K.

Hi...
The laser goes thru a different lens arraignment for DVDs.
Take it to a TV shop and have them "blow out" the laser assembly with some CO2 and clean the lens.

Tempremental playing dvds

In response to your jvc-a75r DVD player, sometimes the solution might be less complex than it may appear. Had the same problem with my Samsung s321,the machine refused to read DVD's but would play CD's no problem. Simply opened up the cover(usually)4-6 small screws, and found my dog's hair inside of the player covering the laser eye.Electrostatic ionization attracts dust, etc. into the player remarkably well sometimes. Carefully used a cotton swap to remove debri. PLayerworked fine afterwards ...Good luck!
