Sure you can get it done at the nearest electronic service centre unless you wantt it to be done at the authorised service centre. But if you can be confident check your bateries, check your belts within the set and replace them with the correct size. sounds like a belt slipping try renewing them they are fairly cheap to replace.sony tend to be very reliable but this is quite an old item now and belts degrade with time and use.farr64
Check and clean the contacts.
Also if you take the back cover off, you can see the red and black battery wires connected to the board. Make sure they are connected.
did you record them on the same unit?
It may be an alignment problem.
If it's the same unit, try cleaning the heads.
There are dat cleaning tapes too, but they beat on the heads.

I have a faulty one as well, mine chews tapes, Sony has quoted me $500 to fix it. I can get a 2nd hand one for half that. If anyone has any suggestions re: fixing it cheaper, please email me at [email protected]
