If you are getting a horizontal or vertical line on the screen mostly this is an LCD issue. bring your computer to compaq's authorized service center to have the LCD replaced.
That is either going to be something simple like a connector being dirty or not seated correctly or a problem in the monitor itself.
Unplug and reconnect the cables a few times.If you are lucky this will fix it. Usually however this indicates a problem either in the video section on the monitor board or a panel edge connector problem.
Check if you have any warrenty left as this will be covered. Keep in mind that repair costs if you pay for them will be a good chunk of buying a new replacement.
Vertical lines that appear on the lcd are from two sources, one being a loose data cable. This cable is the flat cable that is usually running up the left center of the lcd and plugs into the motherboard on the left side under the keyboard. Now usually this cable is held into place by adhesive on the plug itself and sometimes there are small catches that hold it. It is entirely possible that this plug can be dislodged and cause the symptoms. The most likely scenario however is that the screen is starting to fail and this is just the start of a cascading effect until it goes out completely. Sometimes if you press on or "torque" the screen the lines will disappear, this is also indicative of imminent screen failure.
Thats a generic problem with LCD screens. Its more common in Mobile screens. Sorry, no there is no fix to it other than replacing the LCD itself. Just pray that it shall not grow because as and when the compressed gas from within the LCD will leak the line will be becoming broader and broader. It is caused by damage to the LCD corner Just a hit on side of LCD and a hairline crack for giving way to the encapsulated gas.
Honestly you have a big problem because the driver IC & Tape Carrier Package inside controller board at vertical area are damage or itself defective could cause you have 2 inches line appear in your display. The best solutions for this replace lcd panel to fix vertical line.
Try connecting an external monitor to the Dell Inspiron 9300 and see if the vertical line is also present on the monitor. If the monitor display is fine, then your laptop’s LCD display panel is defective. If the monitor also displays the vertical line, then your problem is with either the video card or motherboard located inside your laptop. Not sure if the Compaq Presario has an external monitor plug, but if it does the above procedure can be applied to that one as well. I know not everyone has this ability, but if you can, go to a friend's
house and hook up an external monitor to your laptop. You may need to
use the function keys to switch from LCD to external, but if the lines
go away on the external, you have a bad LCD. If the line shows up
still on the external, then your problem is either:
a) video driver (free, easy fix) b) bad inverter (video 'outputter') ...approximately $10-50/varies + labor costs to replace c) bad video card/motherboard ...usually between $200-$400 + labor to replace
