I solved this problem by calling nikon. they said to fully charge the battery for a couple of hours. mine didn't work, so i called back and they told me to send it in for a repair and that's what i'm doing because i have a 4 year warranty on mine.
This camera sucks. Tried everything suggested here and ended up breaking the stupid thing. Hate it... Will never get their products again. Still looking for new one that will not get the stupid lend error message. BTW had this error a couple of times before today and hitting the camera worked, but i guess after a couple of times that this has to be done, the camera just gives up...

Hi:
Sometimes you can try to get it unstuck by looking at the lens at is is. Then determine if it appears to be at a slight angle, if so, it may be that you can force the lens in the opposite direction. This may not work, and may damage the lens further, however, since it is not working, trying may be just what is needed.
I have had some success by forcing the lens in the opposite direction as it is turned on with pressure of my fingers pushing it. It has not always worked, but I have two which worked just fine... one was a 7.1mpxl nikon and the other was a 8mpxl Canon.
They both were off track, and jumped back by a little force.
If the lens was hit or dropped, then damage can be more than can be fixed. What can happen is that the small track parts can be broken, then there is no way to get it back on track.
Also, dirt or sand can do a number on these small parts. It is amazing how these extremely small pieces of sand can jam a lens, but I have seen it happen.
Take a hint and keep the camera away from sand and water, or risk trouble.

You may not be able to... but may be worth a try.

i bought my camera in malaysia so only have warranty for that country, when i crossed the border into singapore the next day i started to get a lens cover error where the lens wouldnt open it was tempermental so worked sometimes. now the lens always opens but it says lens error and does not work at all, i dont no what to do as only have warranty for country it was issued but it does not and has not ever worked.
I have exactly the same LENS COVER ERROR screen problem as others on the www which was occurring intermittently and now won't go away at all. Took camera to shop where my son bought it as a christmas gift for me and they were pretty dismissive. Said it was dirt and that it would cost £80 to send away and repair and that I should buy another! This seems ridiculous as I've only had the camera for fifteen months and was very happy with the results - it take super little pics and is easy to manage with my pc. [email protected]
