It's out or warranty so if you can't get it working, Apple with replace it for around 80 dollars, or you can trade it in for a new model for 10% off.

The easiest thing to do is go onto to youtube and search battery replacement on your particular model. Video is usually about 6 minutes long and is very simple to follow directions. To solve the Credit card issue, you can purchase a pre paid for a few dollars and load ten dollars on it to spend on ebay. The battery and tools to do the job is usually around 5-6 dollars if you dont mind waiting a month to get it from China. Simple inexpensive and hopefully this will help you out and cost about 10 dollars to fix and about 10 minutes of your time
You can buy the mp3 player on ebay for about 20-30 dollars that is cheaper then buying the screen would be most likely. You could buy the one gig for 10-15 dollars and use that screen.
