Says ethernet adapter not plugged in

My 2 Wire ethernet adapter (plugs into USB and out to phone line) suddenlystopped working.. Power light is on, but network light is not. I havenot changed any software...I tried 2 different adapters and both havethe same problem. It is on a Mac G4, OS 10.3... This happened once beforeand removing the appleairport2.kext from the extensions folders got itto work... not happening this time.
In the network settings, it showa red dot and says ethernet adapter not connected...but it is! It recognizes "en1" and "en3" when I change adapters, but still says they are not plugged in...AndI've tried different ports...
Modem is working fine on the hard wired computer and on wireless.. this old computer has no wireless card, hence the need for the ethernet adapter.
Any suggestions?

I always try to do the obvius first but sometimes overlook this point. Try changing your cable. I've run into this with my usb cables all the time. Hope this helps.

7.Plug the free end of the gray phone cable into the port on the back of the router labeled "Phone Line."

Dell optiplex GX620 desktop has an ethernet port on it, that is not an adapter, I cannot connect to the internet, I downloaded and installed a driver for a wireless ethernet adapter, but that has not...

Okay,..........

1) You can download a wireless Ethernet adapter driver all day, but if you Do Not have a wireless adapter card installed in your computer, the drivers do you no good.

Or if you do not have a wireless USB adapter plugged into a USB port.

Example of a wireless adapter card,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4695358&CatId=2692

Example of a wireless USB device,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6367137&CatId=2692

Example of an Ethernet adapter card,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=686143&CatId=200

If you are just going to hardwire the computer, just buy an Ethernet adapter card, (PCI version), and install it in your computer, (On the motherboard), in any available white PCI slot.

IF it is the Mini Tower model.

The Desktop, Small Form Factor (SFF), and Ultra Small Form Factor (SFF) computers, are too small in width for a regular size Ethernet adapter card.

They need a Low-Profile Ethernet adapter card,

This is for a Dell Optiplex GX620 Mini-Tower computer,

Scroll the page down until you come to the bold blue heading - System Board Components
This is an illustration of a Top view of the Mini-Tower's motherboard.

16 and 17 point to two PCI slots.
This is where an Ethernet adapter card that is the PCI version, will plug into.

PCI slots are White in color.
An example of a basic PCI slot, ( 3 are shown),

If you do decide to go wireless;

1) Wireless networking operates at half of the speed of wired networking.

A computer that is wired directly to an Ethernet adapter card, is twice as fast on the internet, as a computer that is connected wireless.

2) Make sure your Router is capable of wireless.
Make sure the wireless router has a built-in Modem, or that you have a separate Modem.

[ For DSL.
Phone line connects to Filter. Filter has a place for a telephone cable, and an Ethernet cable.
Ethernet cable connects to Filter, and other end connects to Modem.
Ethernet cable goes from Modem to Wireless router that does not have a built-in Modem.

OR,
Phone line connects to Filter. Ethernet cable from Filter goes directly to wireless router, that has a built-in Modem.

Computer has to have a USB wireless device, or a wireless adapter card, installed.

Followed all the set up steps but my DSL light would not stay on

  • 1 Plug the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on your wall. If you do not have Internet ports installed in your home, connect a phone line adapter to a phone line jack. The adapter makes the phone line wider so Ethernet cables can connect to it. This does not block your phone from use.
  • 2 Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on the back side of the Netgear DSL modem.
  • 3 Connect the Netgear DSL modem to a local power source. The power plug inserts into the modem via a small port on the rear of the modem.
  • 4 Insert a second Ethernet cable into one of the numbered ports on the back of the modem. Run the cable to your computer and plug it into the Ethernet port on the computer.
  • 5 Look on the back end of the DSL modem for an HTTP: address. Type this into your Internet browser's search bar. The Netgear DSL modem menu appears on the screen.
  • 6 Select how many computers are to use the modem, if you are using it with other DSL modems and set up a password (the default username and password is "admin"). Click "OK" to initiate the changes you made to the menu. You can now use your Netgear DSL modem to connect to the Internet.

    Router is not working

What does this line mean? "It's reading all the other computers but isn't working."

Do you mean that the other computers are hard-wired to ports 1, 2, 3 & four on the back of the router? Or are you going totally wireless? Is your cable, or satellite modem plugged into the port labeled WAN?

    1. Place the router in an open and central location. Do not plug the power adapter into the router.

    2. Turn the power off on your modem. If there is no on/off switch, then unplug the modem’s power adapter. Shut down your computer.

    3. Unplug the Ethernet cable from your modem and plug it into the WAN port on the router.

    4. Plug an Ethernet cable into one of the four LAN ports on the router. Plug the other end into the Ethernet port on your computer.

    5. Turn on or plug in your modem and wait for it to go through its boot cycle. It takes about 30 seconds. Watch the lights on the modem to tell when it has finished booting.

    6. Plug the power adapter into your router. Again, wait about 30 seconds for the router to boot.

    7. Turn on your computer.

    8. Verify the link lights on the router. The power light, WAN light, and the LAN light for the port you plugged your computer into.

Now, open Internet Explorer (web browser) and in the Address line, type 192.168.0.1 and hit enter. You should see a login screen. Enter a user ID of admin and leave the password blank.

This should log you into the configuration utility for your router. You should see a Setup Wizard button that will walk you through setting up your router.

Can I get the internet on compaq armada 1700 laptop?

That phone line will only be for actual phone lines.. as it will be a modem.

If the lappy has an ethernet port (slightly larger than a phone port, but looks the same) you could use that with an ethernet cable to a DSL modem. (the modem has the phone wire plugged into it)

Most laptops have an ethernet port, but yours might be a bit too old perhaps? If that's the case, you can buy either a USB to ethernet adapter (but you might not have that either) or a PCMCIA ethernet card. The latter will definitely work for you, and can be bought second hand VERY cheaply... if not for nothing.

I really hope it has something a bit newer than '95 though... otherwise just getting the internet to work could be a problem. Good luck!

    2 wire 1000sw

    Hi!
Kindly check if you are using the same 2wire power adapter that came originally with the whole package, also try plugging it in another power outlet, like the kitchen or bathroom, & see how long the power light stays on. Plug it straight in the wall socket. If power light keeps going on/off even if you have plugged it in another power outlet, maybe you need to restore this modem back to its default settings. That can be done by doing a hard reset on the modem, push the reset button (found between the ethernet & usb ports), but be sure you have a record of your username & password on your internet account.

Need to hook up Belkin G wireless router to Motorola SB5120

Plug your cable line into your modem, make sure it's tight, but don't use a tool. Next plug the ethernet line from the modem to your PC ethernet port. Then plug in your power to the modem. Allow your modem to sync. Don't use the USB line at all. Do not even hook it up unless your computer doesn't have a working ethernet line. Don't run the disk either, it will only install the modem driver that is only used if you use USB.

If you have issues connecting after that, you may have to go into your ethernet adapter settings and make sure that it is using DHCP. DSL usually uses a different setting (PPP I think) and you will not be able to connect.

By the way, excellent choice in modems.
