Did you try to reset the device? Turn off the Archos, remove the battery. Near the 2.5" hard disk you will see a small golden button. Press it with the tip of a pen during 10 seconds. Put the battery back and turn on the device. Maybe it helps.
As long as you replace the hard drive with the same exact one, it should be possible. You can contact the manufacturer with the below options and they can assist you in getting a new drive.
The Archos need to be plugged into an "active" USB port, giving 5volts and no less than 500mA. Some old computers or laptops could´nt reach this performance.
I had the exact same problem, I looked a bit on the net and I found the answer. What you have to do is push the reset button when your archos isn't plugged on. The reset button is located behind the battery ( you'll have to the remove the battery ) near the pins that connects the archos to its battery. It looks like a gold circle and if you push it you'll see it's a button. After pushing the reset button try to put the battery on back again and replug your archos, it should work normally now. Good luck !
Take the battery off, and to the left of the battery connetion tabs is a small gold button, push and hold for 10 seconds. It should start up after doing this.
does the archos come from europe and you are in the US, my point is if it is off say ebay theit will be set up for 240v and therefore is shall we say starved of power.
I had a similar problem remove the battery and push the gold coloured reset button. It worked on mine, You don't lose any info doing this. I got the advice from the Archos support phone number
